It was OK yesterday and Firefox is running perfectly.
As Thunderbird will not open I cannot get to the Settings etc.
The only thing I can think of is that yesterday we tried to install VMWareplayer. It didn't work so it was removed.
Any ideas, please?

First I'd double check if the offending account uses IMAP. If so, I'd remove it from Thunderbird. Then re-install it.

Another, perhaps more cautious approach is to change the name of the existing account, then install it again, alongside the pre-existing account. That way you have zero risk of losing sight of anything in the old instance of the account.

The reason for changing the old account's name is that Thunderbird won't allow two accounts with the same name. But since it doesn't actually ask you to set a name for an account, but synthesises a name from the email address, a second instance of an account will inevitably get the same name as the first. So, we can change the first account's name and then when we add the second instance, it can't clash with the old.

But I take it that you have Thunderbird on a Mac computer?

Has this account ever worked before? Has it just stopped working? Is it POP or IMAP? If IMAP, I'd just remove the broken account and set it up again. Your messages are stored on the server and will reappear when you manage to get it to connect.

If you can't find a way to share the information asked for, it's very hard to help you further, because we can't see what might be wrong. Setting up the account again gives Thunderbird a clean start, and it's generally quite good with automatic configuration of Gmail accounts. I would recommend that you choose OAuth2 when that choice is offered.
