Do you know how to open the Account Settings window in Thunderbird?

In Account Settings, at the left is a list of your accounts. Select the one you want to remove. Click the button at the bottom of the panel that shows this list. This button will give you a drop down list of actions, one of which is "Remove Account".

Note that "Remove Account" does what it says and that old account will vanish, taking away its folders and the messages inside them. If there is anything there that you want to keep, move it to another account first!

When I try to delete account using 'Account Actions' the 'Remove Account' option is greyed out and cannot be used. This is for my TalkTalk email account. For other accounts the option is available, no problem.

As I said above, my problem isn't that I can't find the Remove Account command, but that in the case of my TalkTalk account it is greyed out and so not available as an option. Can anyone help me on this?

You are not allowed to remove the default account. If you have only one account then that is of necessity also the default account.

Set a different account as the default and you'll be allowed to remove the Talk talk account.

Thanks. I've set another account as default, but it still won't let me delete the TalkTalk one (option still greyed out), which is described as a 'special account'.

So you have renamed the "Local Folders" special account.

Change it back to Local Folders and we'll understand what's going on in future.

You could reset this by opening your profile and deleting the Local Folders folder under Mail. Thunderbird will quietly re-create it on finding it absent (I think).

I can't think of a better resource than the link I gave you to explain the intended use of Local Folders.

This is why you do not hijack someone else's thread. The OP solved their problem and marked it as such. Now everyone involved gets a notification because 2 people ignored the rules to start your own thread and not hijack someone else's.

Go to Help|Troubleshooting Information.

Click on the button next to "Profile folder" to open your profile folder in your file manager.

If you run a virgin copy of Thunderbird without any pre-existing profile there will be an account named Local Folders. If you don't have this, you or someone else has renamed it. Simple as that. Yours has obviously been renamed to "Talk Talk".

I have showed a link to an article describing what Local Folders is and what it's used or. If there is anything there in particular you don't understand, please ask for explanation. But so far all I'm hearing is a denial that it ever was there.

My query is related. I have five e-mail accounts one of which is duplicated on the left hand list. The same messages are displayed in both the in-boxes. If I select one of these two accounts and delete it will the messages still remain in the in-box not being deleted? Many thanks.

Thanks for this, which had been posted before as the 'Chosen Solution'. But as I said before, in my case the 'Remove Account' option is greyed out. As I also said before, I think I'll just have to live with it!
