What I'm Trying to Do: import bookmarks (from an HTML file) from my old PC's Firefox to my new PC's Firefox. The Problem: whenever I attempt this (following the steps outlined in this site's article, "Import Bookmarks from an HTML file"), Firefox's Library window won't close, and trying to close it causes Firefox to stop responding. What I've Tried: creating a new version of my bookmarks file; restarting. (Neither worked.)

Note: my only goal here is to import my bookmarks; if this can be done from something other than an HTML file, or via another method, that's fine (I just used this one because I'd done it successfully in the past, and the process seemed relatively simple).

Also, my tech skills are modest at best, so newbie-level solutions would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance.

Isisombululo esikhethiwe

Just wanted to let everyone know (especially those who already replied to my original post-- thank you) that this problem seems to have solved itself (literally: I didn't do anything), though I'm pretty mystified as to how or why.

Hours after I posted my question, I opened Firefox on my new PC and saw that my old PC's bookmarks were all there, even though I'd long since given up on any attempt to import them.

I can't figure out how this happened! My best guess is that, since I'd used Windows Easy Transfer with these two PCs earlier that day, there was somehow a huge lag (we're talking many hours here) between when the program ostensibly completed its work and when some of the data actually transferred. (Repeated restarts may have been part of accomplishing this-- too bad none of the info I had on Windows Easy Transfer mentioned that this might be necessary.)

Anyway, I'm glad my bookmarks are there, finally... even if I never really know how it came about.

Again, thanks for responding so promptly to my post.

How was that HTML file created? What is the first line of code in that HTML file?

Any old user created HTML file with hyperlinks won't work for the "Import Bookmarks from HTML ..." feature. You need a genuine bookmarks.html file which would start like this: < !DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1 >

It sounds like Firefox was not finished reading the HTML file. In fact, it may have frozen the browser.

Open the HTML file in a word type program and look around. Does the file look okay?

That was very good work. Well done.

There was an add-on that auto creates backups of your profile. But it does not work in the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.
