Firefox keeps crashing even though I tried everything to make it stop

My Firefox Browser crashes frequently on Windows 7, despite me having taken the following measures:

  • Install the most recent driver for my video card, which is an experimental one since the support for my video card has been discontinued (needless to say, this didn't CAUSE the crashes, because it crashed already before, when the normal driver was installed)
  • Disable all Add-Ons (obviously)
  • Disable all possible forms of hardware acceleration or anything like that in the options of Firefox (obviosly)
  • Re-install firefox a ton of times, partly re-setting all settings
  • Enable swapping space on my SSD, even though I got 8 Gigs of RAM and never do anything computationally intense while browsing, and in fact I never really use up even 3 Gigs of it
  • Re-installing Windows completely
  • Run a virus scan

I should also say that I repeatedly ran a memory error detection tool, which didn't find anything. Curiously, Chromium will also crash frequently, so that Opera is basically the only browser I can run stably; but Opera won't even let me choose my own default search engine and includes a number of very annoying advertisements, whence I'd rather stick to Firefox if possible. Hence, I'd really be grateful for any help.

Thanks, I disabled a Kaspersky daemon that should take care of scanning websites for malware. I suppose that makes my system less safe, but since I'm using NoScript and keep away from underground sites, I should be O.K.

There is nothing in the crashing thread that is related to Kaspersky, so it is unlikely that this software is causing the problem.

Remember that items that are flagged in the modules list merely mean that there are no symbols available to map an address to a line in the source code or to an entry in the DLL.


Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

None of the mentioned tests yielded a positive result (except a few trackers which were deleted by Spybot S&D).

The latest crash at least closed down only the current tab and not the whole browser. I wonder whether it's a new feature, it's a good one anyhow.

At the very least two crash reports have been sent to the respective servers, namely the two to which I already linked above. Finally, I already experimented quite a bit by installing new AMD drivers and even removing any AMD driver and Kaspersky completely. Nothing worked as yet, and I'm writing these lines from my Opera browser, since now Firefox crashes right when I start it.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Post any crashes using Safe Mode.
