I had assumed it was caused by loadeding an addon with a hidden virus since refreshing Mozilla seemed to make it go away. I recently refreshed Firefox and haven't loaded any addons and it still appeared so clearly that is not it. Obviously I did not load the fake update. How do I get rid of it? TempusFugit

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org {web link}

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good ad / pop-up blocker.

Thanks so much for your responses. Unfortunately this did not solve my problem. I am aware to not install fake updates. My Firefox was open on my yahoo email I had read some emails I did not click on any links. While the browser was just sitting there it redirected to this URL. How is this happening? How do I stop it from happening? I don't think this is an add nor is it a popup so those addons probably will not help, it redirects the first open tab of my browser to this URL. There has to be a way to trace what is happening within Firefox. The browser is being redirected automatically, is there a log of that somewhere? I very much doubt yahoo is doing this but I suppose it's possible this is being sent through an infected add but rather than blindly installing addons I'm not sure I trust I'd like to know for certain.
Does Firefox log this activity already or is there a way to make it so? TempusFugit

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

And it's good for you to be on the alert, for these are fake updates !
Firefox will always update from within the browser and not from a random webpage.
Scammers have been using this tactic, trying to get users to download and infect their computer.
Hard to get rid off, as they will change their URL on a daily basis.
You could consider an ad-blocking add-on like :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=ss
That might keep you from getting these annoying fake updates again.
