Plasticumbrella overrode the browser when an Application update came up which I thought was for my computer applications (Mac) so I deleted it in preferences and re-instated Firefox and rebooted but then Bing somehow took over?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
