I did change gmail p/word, but on opening Thunderbird it asked me to provide new p/word for gmail acc. it then proceeded to stop working altogether !!

Upgrade to versions 52.1. There are issues between gmail and older versions. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.1.0/releasenotes/
