Why can't I display the sending email address in the message list?

The question says it all. The From and Correspondents columns have some descriptive text, but not the email address. I have set the Display Option to uncheck "display only name for people in my address book" (or words to that affect).

By looking at the return email address it is easy to spot spam in most cases.

BTW, why not show all the link URL's embedded in an email in a side panel, to make it easier for casual users to spot fishing attacks?

If the email contains remote content then you would see all of those links via the remote content options button.

RE: email addresses - this is current situation: Emails can be sent as just the email address or the sender can add a name prior to the email address. You have no control over this. It is sent as part of the FROM header and therefore will be displayed in the 'From' header when you select an email to read or it can be located in the 'View source'.

If only email address is sent by sender then you will only see the email address in both the Message Header and the From column.

If the sender included a name preceding the email address, then both will be displayed in the Message Header and the name they included will be displayed in the 'From' column.

For any contact in your address books, you have the option to set a 'Display name' and choose to 'Always prefer display name over the message header'. eg: I have a display name of 'Mum' which is shown instead of her name and email address. I could equally set the Display Name as the email address, but for people you know that seems illogical.

However, if I access 'Options' > 'Display' and uncheck 'show only display name for people in my address book', then all my individual selected 'Display Names' in the Addess Book will be ignored and I will see the From Message header as it was created and sent by the sender. Although the yellow star will still indicate that the person is in the address book.

In the 'From' column this will also change. If the sender only sent their email address as the From header, then you will see only the email address in the 'FRom' column. If the sender sent their name followed by email address, then you will see the sent name.

A bug was created but as far as I'm aware no one has taken it up to work on, so it is still listed as 'new'.

There is an addon extension which creates another Column, but I'm not sure if it works in current version. It may be worth a try.

If you decide to try out the addon extension please report back on whether it still works for you.
