Linux user; I can't open a downloaded text file, as I have many times before and I just used the Refresh Firefox feature to no avail.

As directed by a support article here, I click on the highlighted downloaded file but it does not open. Using this same method I successfully opened this same file in August 2016. It is a church directory with text and pictures. The office uses MS Word, but I don't know what version. I have been using firefox since 2004 and have opened many downloaded files.

My machine, Dell Studio, has been acting a little buggy lately, like displaying an older version of an edited collection of photos which soon changed to the recently edited version (whew!). At this moment I can't remember the other odd bits but they are not so bad. They seem to have started after I visited a FREE porn site.

Is the downloaded document still on the Downloads list (Ctrl+Shift+y)? If so, try right-click > Open Containing Folder. This should launch your file browser with the document highlighted. Are you able to open it from there?

It sounds as though the document would have originated on Windows. Does it have one of the customary MS Word file extensions: .doc or .docx? Which application do you usually use to open Word documents, e.g., LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice Writer?

Thanks for your suggestions but using them I'm still unable to open the download. This is a .pdf file, pardon my error. I use LibreOffice Writer, although since I retired I rarely see Word documents.

The highlighted downloaded document is in the Downloads list. Right-click > Open Containing Folder does not open it. Exploring the files in my download list I just discovered that some pictures open in Image Viewer (3.18.2) by double left clicking. Starting from the most recent downloads, all open. YET, of those downloaded before 9.03.16, with a few exceptions, none open. I discovered that when I right-click on a highlighted file a several item menu comes up which includes "Open Containing Folder". If these letters are greyed out the file doesn't open. About 70% of my files act this way. Actually even when the said menu item is "lit" still nothing happens when I click it (yet only in this "lit" state, double left clicking will open an image). whew...

90% of the files on my download list are .jpeg and there are about 135 of roughly 8kb size. I think each of these images are also in my pictures folder (Files 3.14.3).

Are there item/size/time limits that might affect opening downloaded files and/or the management of this list? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much for your help.

p.s (Ctrl+Shift+y) works great, taking me directly to the downloaded file I am working with so thank you thank you.

I suspect either the files were deleted or moved, or Firefox's download history has become corrupted and lost the folder in which the files were originally saved.
