I need to restore my session
Hello.
My computer froze and when i re-opened firefox all my tabs were gone. I tried to follow the steps in this post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1135636
but it I don't seem to have the recovery file that is mentioned. Is there anyone that can help with this please? I had a ton of tabs open that I need back!!
Thank you in advance.

this is on my work computer and IT has disabled upgrading to other versions, I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it other than they want to control what gets upgraded and what doesnt.
That's insane.
Did you find a sessionstore.bak file and make a copy somewhere safe? You can take a look at what is in that file using the bookmarklet method in this post (probably -- I don't remember Firefox 28 that well at this point): https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1136583#answer-911290
If you had the tabs open for a long time, check for whether Windows has a copy in a restore point. Right-click your sessionstore.js file, open Properties, then the Previous Versions tab. If you find any promising candidates, use the Copy button to output them to a different folder, then you can examine their contents using the bookmarklet method. You could repeat the process with the sessionstore.bak file.
Please be careful not to overwrite the live files while Firefox is running.

On the History menu, is Restore Previous Session available? If so, does it help at all? After using it, check for Recently Closed Windows and within each window, Recently Closed Tabs.
Your Firefox identified itself as version 28. Is that correct? The other thread refers to files that only exist in Firefox 33 and later. In Firefox 32 and earlier, you only have two session files, both would be at the main level of the profile folder:
- sessionstore.js
- sessionstore.bak
The system obviously was more fragile back then...
Also, version 28 is not secure; Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release.
If something is holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 48, please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds. Is it anything that can't be addressed by using the Classic Theme Restorer extension?
Hi jscher---Thanks for the quick reply.

Also the 'restore session' and 'restore tabs' is grayed out. Can anything be done?

holy crap!!! it worked!! there was a previous version of the sessionstore.js file and used the bookmarlet method!!
I had some 93 tabs open with lots of valuable research and information--thank you so much!!
I talked to IT and apparently we used outdated versions of firefox and IE because of our timekeeping software that only works on these old versions. Anything I can do to save these and future tabs so it doesnt occur again the the future?
It's good your IT hasn't disabled shadow copies!
You can try setting up an automated or manual procedure for backing up sessionstore.js from time to time. Maybe something here will help: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
