Bookmarks Trash Folder: Where is it?

It seems Mozilla has not included a Trash folder in Bookmarks. Or is it somewhere else? It is so easy to accidentally delete a folder (that could contain thousands of bookmarks accumulated over several years). Why not have a Trash folder there? We've got the useless Unsorted Bookmarks, Bookmarks Toolbar but not Trash? Restoring is an option but a really dumb one as you may have done so much work since the previous day. A Trash folder is the intelligent way to go. Maybe its somewhere else. But who would hide it? Is there an extension I wonder if Mozilla has deemed us unworthy for a Trash folder? That would work.

This is probably the future of software. The main program is offered in a very basic, stripped down version. Then developers see what it needs and offer add-ons for it. When there is a demand for something it would be filled. Very democratic.

No, there is no "trash" folder for bookmarks. If you are working in the Library dialog -- the one that opens when you use either

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks

-- then you can use Undo by either

  • pressing Ctrl+z
  • (menu bar) Organize > Undo

The Undo buffer is cleared when you exit Firefox.

If you need to restore a portion of a backup, there is a somewhat complicated way to do it. However, if you are talking about a lot of loss of work, this would be worth it:

(1) Make a current backup in JSON format as described in this article:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

(2) Restore the previous backup that has the missing content using the steps in the same article

(3) Make an HTML export of the restored bookmarks as described in this article:

Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks

(4) Restore the backup you created in step #1

(5) To add the missing bookmarks back, either:

(A) Import the full html file you created in step #3, then drag/drop or cut/paste selected folders back to their places in the menu. See:

Import Bookmarks from an HTML file

This will add an "Imported Bookmarks" folder either at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu or in Unsorted Bookmarks. After you are done copying the missing bookmarks, you can delete the whole Imported Bookmarks folder.

(B) Edit the HTML file in an HTML editor so that it contains only what you want to restore, and then import it.

Note: If you tag your bookmarks, the tags are preserved in JSON backups but not in HTML exports. It is theoretically possible to stitch together parts of JSON backups to preserve all data for each bookmark, but I am not aware of any tools for that.

If you have 2 versions you need to compare them to make sure your restored version doesn't wipe out newly added entries. Is it possible to sort them by Date Modified? That would work.

The point is using Bookmarks without a Trash folder isn't very smart. Just checked. There are numerous Add-Ons for this. Great minds think alike I guess. Or forgetful people that make mistakes with their Bookmarks think alike. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmark-recycler/

The RESTORE feature ALWAYS completely replaces your existing bookmarks. Only the IMPORT feature is nondestructive.

Where are you viewing that you want to sort?

My 2 cents

If you are making major changes to the bookmarks such as deliberately deleting or moving thousands of bookmarks make sure you back then, up first.

Day to day changes of your bookmarks library will probably not be major, and the standard snapshot backups will probably help.

The auto backup of bookmarks is a great move on Mozilla's part. I don't know of any other browser that does this. Very, very smart.

I have used the Undo command for single bookmarks but for folders I never though of it. I guess I'm scared of wiping out stuff I've recently added.

I'll try that Bookmarks Recycler and see how it works.

Bookmarks Recycler needs the Bookmark Toolbar to function. Who wastes space and uses something like that I wonder? Grandmothers in old age homes? Maybe there are other add-ons for this that place a folder actually on the page you're working on.

So you can just activate the Bookmarks Toolbar when you need to use this Add-On which shouldn't be often.

Sorry I have not tried that addon you mention.

However Firefox; not long ago; improved the bookmarks so that it kept more intelligent backups. The backup snapshots won't catch everything, but if you know you are making major changes make a manual backup first.
