Cannot print from firefox (or Thunderbird) after July Windows 10 updates

Kuphostiwe

After the July Windows 10 updates I could print nothing to my (ancient but effective) Epson c66 printer. A further MS update was issued and i could then print from MS software, Open Office and Adobe, but still not from Firefox or Thunderbird. Any suggestions? (Firefox 47.0.1 Thunderbird 45.2.0)

Sometimes after Windows updates, certain drivers may need to be reinstalled on your system in order to function properly.

Please try reinstalling the drivers and software associated with your printer. Consult your user manual for further instructions or contact your manufacturer.

Thanks for your reply but this does not resolve the problem. In any case the printer uses the inbox driver which presumably has been updated by the recent download from MS Update. The issue is that whilst all MS software (plus others for example Adobe Accrobat, Open Office) can be printed, print jobs from Thunderbird and Firefox cannot. After a print request they 'disappear', and do not appear in the print queue.

Printer issues are common after upgrading to Windows 10. There are a few things that you should do to fix the issue:

  1. Reinstall your printer's drivers from the Epson website
    • In your case, most Epson printers will install the Windows 10 drivers automatically when you power on your printer for the first time on a Windows 10 system. However, sometimes the drivers fail to properly install during the upgrade process. In your case, try disconnecting your printer, uninstalling the printer from your system and then plugging you printer back in.
    • Epson print drivers are not transferable, meaning that you will need to reinstall the new drivers if you change your operating system.
  2. Check that your printer has full access to all programs on your firewall
  3. Press Ctrl + P on a website and select your printer from the drop-down list
  4. Contact Epson for further support if required

Thanks. I have solved the problem by reinstalling the inbox driver (which did not work on its own) and then resetting all the Epson printer lines in about:config. This seemed to prompt whatever was required to make it work in both Firefox and Thunderbird. This is I think the third Windows 10 update which has stopped the printer working; perhaps someone will buy me a more recent model!

Glad to hear that you have solved your problem. A printer upgrade may be a good opinion. A lot of old and legacy devices are not fully compatible with Windows 10, which may be the case in your situation. Thanks for contacting the Mozilla support team.
