My Thunderbird Software Frequently locks up for no reason. I have Windows 10. How do I fix this? I have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for it to unlock and work normally. Rebooting helps. But this is very frustrating. I'm runneing Thunderbird version 45.

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10 Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Does problem go away?

I don't know how to use safe mode. Is there another, simpler way to fix this issue? You indicate that this may be an app start-up problem.

Please help. Best regards, Ken

The instructions in the links are pretty simple. It may help to print them first.

After countless hours with a computer technician familiar with Thunderbird, I learned that we who use Charter (Spectrum) Communications AND Windows 10 AND Thunderbird will continue to experience issues until Thunderbird has a workaround. I am temporarily using another Email program till this gets resolved. I miss my Thunderbird but I don't miss the five days of aggravation! Sorry this is less resolution than benediction: may it all unfold more smoothly in days to come.

With the help of my computer technician friend, I found a solution to this problem. I want to share it with others who may be having the same Thunderbird issue: I downloaded and installed "Thunderfix." I have run it a few times and it definitely works. The trick is that after the software runs its fix, leave the Thunderbird mail open and idle for about 30 minutes without disturbing it. You may need to run the software more than once to effect the fix. My friend says that the Thunderfix continues in the background for about 30 days making adjustments to the Thunderbird mail. Go to www.parhelia-tools.com/products/thunderfix/thunderfix.aspx to download Thunderfix.

Charter has an endless amount of issues. For example https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1116345#answer-863489

Do you have a sense that this person is using Charter?

5-10 minutes is a horrible amount of time. I don't know that we've ever had anyone report an issue that "recovered" after such a period of time.

Note, Thunderfix is merely a workaround.

It sounds like you never got safe mode going. Too bad, the results would have been helpful. Because there's a long list of possible causes, half of which are something other than Thunderbird. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems has a list. Which, without some feedback based on that (which includes safe mode) it will be mere chance that you get workaround from Thunderbird (if indeed the problem is even with Thunderbird).

Hi! I recently reported that Thunderfix had solved my problem. I'm sorry for that. Thunderfix has not worked for me. That was more of a hope than a fact. I love Thunderbird, but I'm giving serious thought of returning to Microsoft Office Outlook as my email client. When I last used it , I found Outlook to be a robust, dependable email app. No email app is perfect, of course. I'd rather that Mozilla would spend some productive time and effort to actually fix the subject Thunderbird glitch. Best regards, Ken Wray

I didn't complete that thought. This description makes me think that you have more than one problem.

For example you have a gmail account. Is the All Mail folder subscribed??

You started with Thunderbird on Windows 7 and didn't complain then. So there was no problem at that time, right?

Testing Thunderbird in Windows and Thunderbird safe mode is the first step in assessing any performance issue. This two test potentially eliminate half a dozen possible problems. Sorry, but if you can't get those going there's not much point looking at other possibilities.

Would you kindly re-send the instructions to me? This time, I will follow-through by having my technician do it. I have never done safe mode. Nor have I ever been into my registry. I don't feel qualified to complete the safe mode procedures nor to touch my registry innards without butchering my PC. I would jump back to Outlook Mail as a last result. But I'd rather continue using Thunderbird without the glitches. I feel "attached" to Thunderbird. By the way, I do have the Spectrum ISP. I do have a Gmail account. And I do use Windows 10. And no, I did not have a frozen Thunderbird until after I installed Windows 10 almost two years ago. But the Thunderbird screen lock-up problem started only within the past two months. Go figure. I'll be waiting for your reply, with your instructions. Thank you. Best regards. Ken Wray

Safe modes have nothing to do with registry or internals, and the instructions are written with the average user in minde to be easy to perform.

I tend to recommend to make the first test be Windows and Thunderbird safe mode at the same time.

BTW, if you have a Charter account, these have been known to cause problems.

They do indeed cause problems. Thunderbird and Charter do not dance well together. That's just the way it is. Windows 10 has created a small host of other problems and exacerbated the challenge with Tbird and Charter (Spectrum). They would do well to resolve those issues sooner than later. Since Microsoft dominates the field, I guess reality dictates that programs which clash with theirs have the responsibility of doing the resolutions. I am using LiveMail, though I still vastly prefer Thunderbird.

Hello. I'm still having this problem. I do want to continue using Thunderbird. But I would like to have a fix for my app freezing ("not responding"). Takes as long as 10 minutes for Thunderbird to restart and work normally. Happens a few times each email session. Yes. Spectrum is my ISP. But there must be a better fix than Mozilla just telling me that my ISP is at fault. My grandson in Oxnard uses Thunderbird and his app does not freeze-up. Never. I think that his ISP is also Spectrum. Help, please.

Kind regards. Ken Wray (kenwray1943@gmail.com)

I have tried using Windows Safe Mode/Thunderbird Safe Mode "fix" per instructions given. Does not work.

Do you have any better advice on this problem?

Looking for more effective input, please. Thanks.

you haven't quite your response format correct yet.

BTW, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom changed the URL for Windows 10 safe mode. The correct link is - win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
