Runtime error, Firefox won't open after upgrading on Win XP machine w/Norton Internet Security

I have two laptops, one upgrades fine when prompted by Mozilla that an upgrade/update is available, the other doesn't. The only difference between the two is that the one that has problems uses Windows XP Professional; the Windows 10 machine is fine. Both have Norton Internet Security.

With the Windows XP machine, when I try to download and install the update, Norton finds a file that it thinks is a virus and quarantines it. The download/upgrade finishes, and then when I try to open Firefox, I get a runtime error because it can't find a file, and i have to uninstall and reinstall it fresh.

Apparently the Norton Internet Security on the XP machine responds to the downloaded files differently than the Win7 machine does.

I'm sick and tired of having to reinstall Firefox on that machine, so I've stopped downloading updates on it. Again, no problem with the Win7 machine, even though it has the same Norton program.

If I just temporarily turn off Norton Internet Security on that machine while updating, will that prevent the problem? Is there any downside? Is this even the problem?
