I keep getting "unresponsive script" error reports and I've tried many options including refeshing firefox. any ideas?
I have an HP Pavillon, Juno email and Firefox is my default browser, At some point while accessing my email I will get the "unresponsive script" error and although it gives my options to continue, debug or close, none of it works and computer freezes. So I have to go to Task Manager and close everything down and start over. Very frustrating. It has also happened when I have been on other websites or with Internet Explorer. HP has tried fixing it, Juno has tried ....all to no avail. I've tried refresh, done many virus/malware scans, etc. It seems to me there is a plug-in or an add-in or some box somewhere not checked. Any ideas?
jscher2000 Thank you very much for your latest suggestion. As it turns out great minds think alike as I spoke with an HP tech who also suggested AdBlock and it has apparently solved my problem so I am absolutely delighted and of course thankful for your help and all the others who tried so hard with me to solve this long frustrating problem. The next time you get this error, write down the message and post it here.
I have several screenshots but unable to copy photo so will just tell you what it says - at least the one I get the most, there are several versions. It says Warning Unresponsive script "A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script i the debugger or let the script continue." Then it gives the choices of continue, debug or stop. However you not only unable to click on any of them or anything else on page. Only option is to go to Task Manager and close down and start all over again. This happens on both Firefox (my default browser) and Internet Explorer but usually only when I am in my Juno email.
I would need the part of the message that states where the error occurred. Also, if you are having the problem with both explorers, the problem may be the website itself. Please post a public link to that site.

Fred, If I understand your request, re "where the error occurred", my internet browser is Juno (www.juno.com) Yes, I got the error on both Firefox and IE which also makes me think Juno, but no resolution from Juno yet either. Were you able to view the screenshots? I think they might show that the encounters are perhaps only with Juno. However yesterday I was on-line 45 minutes without a problem but then had to leave my computer so just shut it down till this morning.
Fred, Just realized that I had only sent you what was in screenshot not actual shot. Do you know a way to do a screen shot on this forum? If so I can try and send.
This forum doesn't allow direct pasting of images, you need to save to a file first and attach the file to your reply.
The script address in the dialog may be a script on the site itself, or to a part of Firefox, or to an add-on. I think that's the part Fred is curious about.
Meanwhile... Another common cause of unresponsive script errors on Windows 7+ is the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.
while I was trying to respond to jscher I got the error and had to shut down but in meantime I will try and put copy of error message here that might show something relevant. Have saved/copied photos but having difficulty opening/attaching to show you will continue to try

Can you crop the relevant part of the image and save that separately? Probably most of the screen isn't relevant.
Taking a Screen shot; Windows > Start > search box > Snip. Select Snipping Tool.
Save the picture(s) to your desktop. Now look at the Reply box below. Press the button under it that says Browse. Now select the screen shot(s) from the desktop and load them one at a time.
ok let's see if this works same problem - trying to upload two "screenshots" -- says one is 1494KB and limit is 1024KB. I don't know how to reduce KB I used the accessories/paint approach as i was not familiar with snipping
This is to upload the script error dialog? Those dialogs are not very big. In Paint, try this:
- Ctrl+a to select the entire image
- Click and drag the image toward the upper left to get the dialog into the corner
- Use the horizontal and vertical scroll bars to view the lower right corner of the image
- Click and drag the little resizing box at the lower right corner toward the upper left to omit unnecessary material (you might have to do this in a few steps depending on your screen resolution)
Then you can save the modified image and it should be much smaller.
jscher your instructions are quite clear but not sure I did what you suggested but take a look at this one example and I will work on trying it again tomorrow. appreciate your patience

Jim, If I'm reading correctly, you are loading something on the following site, but I can't read the last part of the URL:
To capture the error dialog directly from the screen without taking a photo: while the dialog is displayed and is the active window, hold down the Alt key and tap the Print Screen key. Then you can paste into Paint.
(Print Screen captures the whole screen, Alt+PrintScreen captures the active window)

jscher, I was using the alt prt sc with paint method to get the screen shot but that was when it kept telling me it was too large but anyway to answer your question re the disable of plug-ins. No, I have not done that yet....my first hesitation was your reference to Windows 7 and I have 8.1 so was wondering if that made any difference. Will try that later today as I am supposed to be having a callback from HP (from last week checking to make sure every thing is working after they "fixed" the problem.....not)

Are you seeing that dialog AFTER clicking Debug in Firefox's unresponsive script dialog, or INSTEAD of Firefox's unresponsive script dialog? I'm asking that because it looks like a Windows or IE dialog instead of a Firefox dialog.
If you are clicking Debug in Firefox's dialog, don't bother, that is for web developers to fix their scripts and not for end users.
About the Flash protected mode, when I said Windows 7+ I meant to include 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.
jscher, that dialog just pops up and for the most part it does not matter if i click continue, debug or stop....the only thing that works is task manager and shut down (start over) but as you suggested earlier, i just disabled shockwave flash and then shut down firefox and so everything has been fine now for about 10 minutes (but it did once go about 2 hrs without a problem - normally though less than 10 minutes on juno and it pops up) not sure what part was not clear to you but I would be glad to hand type the info or do some kind of cut/paste this is another script but of course it does not show address bar but i am fairly certain it was juno.
