I think I may have a virus. Thunderbird keeps doing very odd things. What should I do?

Thunderbird keeps freezing. For example Spell check will not work. I'll tcheck a word, nothing happens, I repeat the action then I realise there are 8 windows open all checking the spelling. I can'tm quit so I have to crash the computer.

As well as that it more often won't send an email. So I have to resend.

I have had to crash the computer 3 times in the last 24 hours. I am definitely getting a lot of spam.

This is my first mac so I do not have virus software installed - can't remember who advised me not to - should I? If so, do you recommend any particular product?

thanks

Thunderbird freezing is a fairly common issue reported in this forum and can be due to various causes. I wouldn't automatically assume that it's a virus. One cause can be add-ons. Close and restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled to see if that helps. Another can be corrupted index files, especially if you have large folders and a large store of messages. Try compacting folders and restarting. There are other good suggestions here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_%28Thunderbird%29 I can't advise about the wisdom of using or not using antivirus on a Mac, I use Linux. I would think that it's a question a Mac forum, not for here?
