My Firefox (version 44.0.2) continually keeps crashing and the dialog box that pops says: "We're sorry. The application had a problem and crashed. Unfortunately, the crash reporter is unable to submit a report for this crash. Details: The application didn’t live an application data file." The "Okay" button doesn't work, so I click the "X" to exit. Then, when I re-open Firefox, my history, bookmarks, etc. are all gone. I have to restart my computer to get it all back. And, my my email isn't coming through properly, and other apps (I have a MacBook Air) aren't working properly. This has been happening every day for a bout a week now, and it's really frustrating. Fortunately, when I do restart and re-open Firefox, my old tabs, history, etc. come back, but like I said, I have to restart my computer in order to do so. Perhaps this is a Mac issue? Thanks! If anyone needs more info, let me know.

Try to download the full version and trash the currently installed Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the Disk Image file to the desktop

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

You can copy files like these to the current Firefox profile folder to recover specific data.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups

Thanks, but I can't get the add-on: "Places Maintenance can not be installed, because Firefox cannot modify the needed file."

Let's do a clean install; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.

Thanks, but that didn't work at all. Maybe because I couldn't find any Firefox program folders (you mean folders, not files, right). And now Firefox crashes every time I have it open and I close my computer to let it sleep, and it crashes without any pop-up window at all. And, every time I re-open Firefox, it says "Firefox is an application downloaded from the internet" and I have to click "Okay" to proceed. And, for some reason, when I restarted, there were many more applications in my dock than usual, and when I got rid of the ones I don't use, the remaining icons are much smaller than usual. It keeps getting worse!

Thanks so much!

Actually, I'm still having issues, despite replacing the profile folder. It doesn't crash as often, but it does crash, and it still won't re-open my tabs after it crashes. Thanks.
