"Secure Connection Failed" and "The Connection was Reset" and similar messages

Kuphostiwe

Using 10.6.8 and FF 44.0.2.

I have had this problem for months. Through all FF versions. I use Sophos for antivirus. My clock date and time are exactly correct. This happens intermittently but frequently; several times a day. The same problem happens on my laptop, running Yosomite, so it is not related to this old Mac operating system.

The topic where I first (mis)posted this thread had a link provided by jscher2000, a link s/he gave out for someone who has similar error messages. When I clicked on his/her link, I actually received the Secure Connection Failed message (first image below). And as with EVERY other site I have had this (or The Connection was Reset) problem, refresh caused the page to load normally.

Attached also is a Secure Connection Failed at amazon.com, and the last one is The Connection was Reset at weather.gov.

As the images show, there is no other error code or message. I am a home user and for sure not a power user, so please keep that in mind when you make suggestions. For example, I had so much difficulty in getting some of my addons to work that I'd rather live with this problem for years than to try to reinstall addons. Anyway, I don't see how addons can cause it, as installation for all of them predated the problem.

Does it matter how quickly you reload the page (Command+r)? For example, does it fail if you reload within a split second but work if you wait longer? Or does it always work on the second try?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox. (On Windows, it's the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? Not sure how long it will take to recognize a difference...

[Cor-el, I got your post notice but it's not here, so maybe you realized I am on a Mac.]

It makes no difference; on refresh it has always loaded.

I'd like to try safe mode, but I really can't use FF without my bookmarks. And if safe mode does bypass the problem, I would need to stay in safe mode for several days, to confirm no problems.

Instead, I ask: If safe mode bypasses the problem, and given what I have said so far, what does that suggest for a cause?

Isn't there anyone else with this problem?

Yes, sorry about the confusion. I had forgotten to check that.

You can check the connection settings.

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

You'll have full access to your bookmarks, unless you mean externally hosted bookmarks like Yahoo toolbar bookmarks.

And if safe mode does bypass the problem, I would need to stay in safe mode for several days, to confirm no problems.

That may be...

Instead, I ask: If safe mode bypasses the problem, and given what I have said so far, what does that suggest for a cause?

It would suggest an issue with one or more of your extensions. Can you disable any you can live without for 24 hours to see whether that helps? You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side and disable anything nonessential for the purposes of testing.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Isn't there anyone else with this problem?

Do you ever have connect failures like this with HTTP addresses, or only HTTPS addresses? I do think some users have mentioned having to reload sites, but didn't mention secure site errors, so I'm not sure if that's the same issue.

Cor-el: Use system proxy settings is the only thing checked. I dont know if I *need* to use a proxy. All I know about proxy is it means some other company is involved in providing me what I see on the screen.

The first time I clicked on your link, the Connection Failed. But that link just describes what you said.

Jscher2000:

I entered safe mode, and while I was able to restore the Bookmarks Toolbar, when I clicked on sidebar>bookmarks, it just gave me the two or three which were there the first time I installed FF. I dont have any externally hosted bookmarks.

I don't recall the many past sites, nor do I pay attention to whether it is secure or not, but the most recent examples are all from secure sites.

I will try disabling one add-on at a time. I only have 5 (adblock plus, autofill forms, dstocks, theme and font size changer, and toolbar buttons).

Thus, it might be a few days for me to reply to this test. Toolbar buttons first, since it stopped working with V43 and my op system (it still works on my other Yosomite computer), but this issue pre-dates V43.

I just had an occurrence at a non-secure site. Also, Toolbar Buttons is not the culprit as this happened with that disabled.

If you get this for HTTP as well as HTTPS, then we need to think more broadly.

In TCP/IP networking, if a browser attempts to connect and the server responds with a RESET, that is an instruction to immediately cease the connection attempt. But the problem is that this actually could be sent by an intermediary (router, filtering software, attacker), and I'm not even sure that when Firefox says the connection was reset, I should interpret that literally.

We have had some general threads where users accused Firefox of giving up too easily on the first try rather than waiting for a full connection time-out. I can't recall the detailed circumstances -- whether they had connection reset error or other errors -- or whether or how those ended up getting solved.

(I mostly have thoughts specific to Windows...)

I don't think that will help. It's too intermittent.

I have had a chance to check all my add-ons, and each one still produced the failed connection. I have: Adblock plus, auto-fill forms, dstocks, theme and font size changer, and toolbar buttons.

I have this problem or similar for many months, unable to fix it yet. System: Win10Pro Ver1511 Build 10586.104 Firefox44.0.2 I keep everything updated. ESET AV but happened before using ZoneAlarm Xtreme Security also SYMPTOMS Only occurs in HTTPS, I can log in and do some things inside secure sites, but as soon as I try to access or change certain things it drops the connection and I get a Connection Reset Message and you cannot reload I have to log back in from scratch. Eg log into EBay fine but when I try to access EBay internal email it drops out. I have removed all plug-ins etc, still drops. I have done exactly the same in SAFE mode and it still drops. Becoming very frustrating now as I have to go use Explorer to get things done. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Not really the same. Yours is worse. Mine is random, maybe one or two times per broswing session, and not limited to https. Also mine is on a Mac.
