Why are we getting repeated transmissions of an email (from different senders) sometimes up to 40 times?

we are getting repeated transmissions of an email (from different senders) sometimes up to 40 times. this then blocks other possibly important emails with possible jobs we need to quickly return quotes on, for hours sometimes from getting through.

I'd have a look into the Inbox on the email provider's server.

If the repeating message appears there many times over then the fault is with the sender or his email server. Thunderbird is simply giving you what it is being given.

It you don't see repeated messages, then Thunderbird is struggling with a message (or messages) that are in some way incomplete or damaged, such that Thunderbird can't convince itself that the message has been completely downloaded. Imagine a sentence that doesn't have a period at the end

…you're left wondering if there's more to come.

The pragmatic fix is to delete it via the web interface. We can't do anything about the sender's faulty email client. I doubt that Thunderbird's developers would consider diluting its adherence to standards in order to have it tolerate non-compliant messages.
