I backup the folder in %localappdata%\mozilla\firefox\profiles regularly. I just reinstalled windows on a new SSD, and installed firefox through Ninite. Doesn't seem to matter if I copy all the files into the new profile folder or delete that and copy the old profile folder over, neither way seems to want to take. I have 2 copies of this, 1 from earlier today(that seems like it might have somehow wiped itself out...it appears to have similar files to the fresh install, no sessionstore.js, search.json, etc.) and another from the 7th(of this month).

I don't know why it doesn't seem to want to take the profile, even though the backed up files stay in the folder after opening up firefox.

Firefox only stores the caches in %localappdata% (%AppData\Local%), see the about:cache page.

You need a backup of the main profile in %AppData%\Roaming to be able to restore the profile.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Ah, yeah you're right, guess I just assumed it was local as there were similar folder names(before entering the profile folder). It's a good thing that my older backup was from the right location. Thanks, silly little goof up I made.

Also just a note %AppData% is the short cut to the roaming folder(unless you added "\Roaming" for clarification, then understood). Again, thanks, didn't realize there was the cache profile folder.

You're welcome.

I should have omitted the percent signs and write AppData\Roaming.

I have the same issue. I tried putting the backed-up profile into both the local and roaming locations, and it still won't load the profile. I'm really confused because I've been able to migrate profiles plenty of times without issue but this time it simply refuses to recognize it no matter where I put it.

Hi Katyusha454

You need to register a profile in the profiles.ini file to make Firefox recognize and use it.

Easiest to do this is to launch the Profile Manager and create a new profile and click "Choose Folder" and browse to the folder that you want to register as a profile. Firefox will recognize the profile and use it. Otherwise you would have to edit the profiles.ini file yourself.

I've done what you said, and the correct profile is in the ini file, but when I start Firefox all I have is the basic default profile, with none of my bookmarks or anything else. Here's what my ini file says:

[General] StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0] Name=Default User IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/g5rk6y8i.default Default=1

The profile name is the right one and all the files appear to be in the right place, but it still won't load.

Did you copy the profile to "AppData\Roaming"?

Yes, I did.
