Windows 10 scaling problem

I recently bought a new Lenovo UltraHD Windows 10 computer (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y700-series/y700-15-inch/). I've now found out that apparently there are several scaling/blurry issues with Windows 10 and software apps that have not yet been updated to the new OS. Firefox has also been experiencing a scaling problem, but only when I watch videos online, such as ESPN.com. As you can see below, the video controls are super tiny and hard to see. I've contacted other 3rd party software apps and they have provided me with some fixes to this issue and I'm hoping Firefox can do the same.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Does anything change when you move the mouse over the player?

Unfortunately, no, the mouse just turns into a hand with the index finger pointing (forgot what that's called!) and I can pause the video. The scaling of the video controls remains unaltered and super tiny. Nothing changes if I maximize the screen either.

If you have problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions then check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I use Driver Booster to update my drivers and everything is up-to-date according to that program. I'm pretty sure I don't have any problems with flash because the videos are playing just fine with no errors, it's just that the scaling is off as I've shown in the screenshot. I'm almost 100% sure this is a problem on FireFox's end in terms of comparability with Windows 10 and it's an update they need to make.

When I had the same problem with programs such as iObit Uninstaller, the company itself sent me a fix that fixed my scaling problem. So, there's that.

With that said, I'll take a look at your flash links just to be sure and I do appreciate your response. It would be great if someone from Firefox could see this and make a fix because I know I can't be the only one experiencing this on Windows 10 with UltraHD.

EDIT: Some of the links you posted mention RealPlayer and I don't even have that installed on my computer nor have I yet to experience a "crash."

The Flash plugin does not scale correctly with higher-than-HD displays. This is not a new issue with Lenovo displays, but of course, not something you would know about before buying unless you thought to search for it.

For example, from almost two years ago: Playback controls on YouTube and other video players are tiny (Yoga Pro 2 at 3200 x 1800).

For another thread last month, I discovered possible fixes involving other Adobe software, but I didn't find anyone applying this idea to the Flash player plugin or, if appropriate, to Firefox's plugin-container.exe process, so I don't hold out a lot of hope:

Ah, yeah I should have said that it was most likely a Flash plugin *scaling* problem, not a Firefox scaling problem. Ha. Thanks for the post, that was really informative. I've seen Dan's fix and basically I'm going to try that, but if someone like Adobe can fix this issue first, I'd much rather go that route than start editing the registry you know? Also, I think Dan's fix applies to a 32-bit system, so I think I wouldn't want to do the new DWORD (32 bit) Value if I'm using a 64-bit system, right? Same goes with the manifest .txt file he provided.

Also, are there any other legit alternatives to using the flash player that might scale better with Ultra HD? Maybe I can explore that as an option too.

Hi mflatt23, I haven't thought about the registry fix since last month, so I think you're already ahead of me there.

It's worth researching. Sometimes you may be able to substitute an HTML5-based player or a different plugin, but this may require coordinating a couple different add-ons.

As a starting point, maybe: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/video-without-flash/

Nice find! What do you think of this too? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/watch-with-mpv/

It also seems like Firefox is gradually moving away from Flash anyway.

Eventually, Flash will be history. Until then, feel free to try different things until you find a happy medium.

A lot of people talk about this as well: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/html5-video-everywhere/

Anyway, thanks, I think I get the issue and will just probably suck it up for now and wait.
