i have duckduckgo as my home page, when i boot it the cursor is blinking ready in the search bar, but i cannot type in the window without first clicking in the window or otherwise refreshing the page...vs. 37 works fine ( 41 works also). 42 also shuts down spyware blaster, an old fave of mine. doesn't recognize the profile ?

I cannot replicate the DuckDuckGo issue in 42.0 on Win7 64HP. Something other than the browser might be causing the behaviour you described.

Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Extensions are the issue (stealing focus, for example): https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode. If Safe Mode works, disable Extensions one by one until you find the culprit(s).

Avast is a known troublemaker. The extension shows up as disabled, but I assume the AV is still running. The AV proper can use overlays and other direct interference in addition to its browser-based components.

Are you using Spyware Blaster as an Extension or a Plugin in Firefox? If an Extension is blocked, it is outdated (possibly incomptible or vulnerable) and needs to be updated by its developer. If a plugin is blocked, https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/plugincheck/ should tell you why and what to do.
