I get this error message, or one like it when Ff hangs up between tabs, and sometimes when navigating web sites: Script: resource://gre/modules/commonj…/data/b

Since the latest round of updates, Ff hangs up when i try to move between tabs. I get the (not responding) notice at the top of the page, and eventually an error box opens. it says Script: resource://gre/modules/commonj…/data/browserSpecificScript.js:33

If i disable it, Ff works fast again. But clearly, this script reloads as it comes back again and again.

Sometimes it has a different script number at the end -- i have seen js:21 before.

What can i do to disable this script permanently, without losing things i need?

Judging from the resource:// protocol and the name "browserSpecificScript.js," I suspect this is part of an extension. Could you visit the Add-ons page and disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions, anything you can live without for 24 hours. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right and disable as much as possible. Or remove if it's obviously rubbish -- all extensions are optional, none come with Firefox.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that get rid of the errors?

Note: When I search "browserSpecificScript.js" on Google there are references to unwanted extensions for Chrome, so this may be a multi-browser infection. For assistance with systemwide cleaning, please see this article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
