For some weeks I have no history older than today. What happened? Could CCleaner be deleting history.

History and cookies can be removed or not recorded several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings
    (Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

Yes, software like CCleaner can remove the history. It is best to avoid using external software and use built-in means like "Clear history when Firefox closes".

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
  • Clearing Cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.

The fact that today's history is retained made me suspect Firefox.

I have deselected clearing history in CC. I assume that this is due to a change in CCleaner but there is no way to get support from Piriform. There is no FAQ on the issue and no way to ask a question. This has been going on for several CC releases.

Thank goodness for the superior support from Mozilla.
