I was locked out of my Thunderbird Email last night, in my efforts to regain entry Google Gmail sent me a message saying I was using an unsecure app, in this case Thunderbird and I would have to change my settings to allow insecure apps to open my account. I can give more details if you request.

Thanks for any help you can provide, Thunderbird is now accessing my Gmail but now I am afraid there may be a possibility someone may be able to open and use my account.

Open your Thunderbird Account Settings. Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Server Settings

Select 'OAuth2' from the 'Authentication method' drop-down menu for your Gmail account. Do the same for 'Outgoing Server - SMTP'.

With OAuth2 authentication you don't need to allow 'less secure apps' for your Google account.

Note, this assumes your account type is IMAP. It's not applicable for POP accounts.

My account type is POP, how do I get IMAP type, and why isn't Thunderbird the best, that's why I switched from Outlook Mail. Now am I going to have to switch to Google?

Yes google are good at implying it is not safe, but they really are only offering different options. If using POP and you only use your computer to access and download emails then opt for insecure apps option. So have you done as they suggested ? Have you logged onto webmail account and selected the insecure app option?

Do you use your phone to access email in addtion to Thunderbird on computer? If yes, then have a look at setting up a two step authentication for the phone and in addition you would need to create an application specific password to use in Thunderbird. see more info here: creating a two step verification for phone:
