When I click 'Menu', then 'Options', nothing happens - FF not responding!

I also cannot type a URL, nothing happens when I hit enter. I cannot download anything, save a picture (Save As) or any such. I run virus scans and all it finds is tracking cookies - sometimes 900+ of those...

The only way I can go to a web-site, is from the opening Google screen or from my bookmarks.

Download Firefox Full Version For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

• Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox folders by adding .old to them.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.

Your user agent shows that you run Firefox in compatibility mode for Windows 98 (NT 4.10).

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode. You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab. Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

To cor-el; I'm using XP on this computer; there is no "Compatibility" tab. There are other issues and it seems that IE is gone or I'd try that. I've tried to download it but can't download anything.

To FredMcD; can't rename the two folders, "Access Denied".

If I can't get this fixed, will download IE from another computer and install on this one and delete FF if it'll let me. I have a new HP with an AMD A10 and Windows 10 (talk about an upgrade from this one); but I'm not ready to let his one go and ha planned to use it for some things still.

Why not download the latest FF from another computer and then install it on your computer?

Says FF is up to date with 36.0.4. Seem the problem began when I was trying to stop ad-aware tracking cookies thru the Options tab. When I go there, it shows, Not Responding and everything locks up. I have to end task and start over.

It should be there: How to use Windows Program Compatibility mode in Windows XP: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/292533

You can check the Firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Hi garner49:

The compatibility setting is the first thing to focus on, based on past threads, since it causes widespread breakage in Firefox:

After that, we can turn to your other issues.

There is no context menu or compatibility tab. I'm not stupid on computers; but this is getting very frustrating. If I click on the menu at top tight, then options, FF locks up and shows not responding in the task manager. I can't find IE on this computer anymore; it was there, or I'd try that. I may download from another computer and install to see if that works.

This old one has XP Media Edition.

I can run Superantivirus and find hundreds of tracking cookies, delete them and then open one web-site and get them again. I've have set the privacy tab to block all 3rd party. My computer will start to drag and the mouse pointer will not respond and the fan will increase speed, meaning cookies are being loaded again. I'll run the scan and find hundreds (have found over 900) again. I have a new computer with Widows 10; but want to keep this one for other. Once I move all to the new one, I may just format the old one and start over.

I still can't enter a URL or use the search next to it. Only way is to open the short-cut to Google and do a search, then select and it'll open. Still can't download anything.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Now you can remove/rename those folders. Don't forget to use a registry scanner after.

FredMcD: had found explore.exe.mui By clicking, it says: The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an associated in the Folder Options control panel.

If the usual route of right-click > Properties > Compatibility is not available or doesn't show any customization, you could try the Windows Registry Editor. The following thread is for a different program but the principle would be the same:
