Can't import old passwords after update.
So after a recent update on my firefox Dev Edition (42.0a2) it wiped my browser without my knowledge and transferred 'old' information to an "Old Firefox" folder on my desktop. I've gotten some of it back but my saved passwords won't transfer. I copy the files from the old folder into my directory but it doesn't show up in browser, nor do any of the passwords autocomplete.

I did, yes.
It's my fault for trusting alpha software as much as I did, so I'm not really expecting to get my passwords back. I appreciate the help, but I think I can manage not having a few obscure passwords.

The file you want is logins.json
Type about:preferences#security<enter> in the address bar. To the far right of Passwords, press the Saved Passwords button.
Does everything look okay?
In the Old Firefox folder, do you see these files? key3.db and signons.sqlite
Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.
Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Select All of the tests. Then press Execute on the bottom.

Somehow my firefox knows to log into youtube even though it isn't showing saved passwords. I have a new question: If I remove firefox and reinstall, can I replace the files with my files from the Old Firefox folder on my desktop? Would that work?
In the Old Firefox folder, I only see key3.db.

You need two files to recover the passwords: logins.json and key3.db If you have an signons.sqlite file used in older Firefox versions then you can try to recover the passwords stored in that file. You still need the key3.db file for the encryption key.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

If you have a copy of the signons.sqlite file and the matching key3.db file then you can try to force Firefox to migrate passwords saved in this file (you will lose passwords saved in logins.json). You can force Firefox to reimport the passwords from the signons.sqlite file and rebuild the logins.json file with these steps:
- reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
- delete the logins.json file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed
When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true and you should have the passwords imported in the Password Manager unless there may have been errors.
I would love to do something you said but I'm missing files. I can't find logins.json anywhere or signons.sqlite. Whatever updated last night completely wiped everything on my browser and got rid of it.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.
These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.
