Is it "Ads by name"? In some past threads, it infected Firefox's program folder and could be cleared using this method:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 40.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does that flush it?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

• \OldFirefox\Plugins
• \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

The 1st 4 I had already used and they found nothing. The windows defender doesn't work because, of course, it's support expired for Windows XP. I haven't tried the next 2 yet; and the tdsskiller Safety 101: PC Safety, it doesn't have aprogram to download. The mozilla support urls don't help either. I guess I may be trying a full reinstall of Firefox after all. I'll be losing all the Javas I have and with Java not supporting windos XP any longer I may be screwed that way as well

Ok, I've downloaded Spyware search and destroy and kasperkey. I'll deal with them tomorrow. 6 hours of Microsoft Safety Scanner running 6 hours this morning was enough for today.

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

I guess I'm getting rid of Firefox. These stupid scanners puts tons of things up and I know some of them are good but the rest I'm scared to get rid of because one time I did that on another pc and had to reinstall EVERYTHING. So I geuss firefox has finally bit the dust. Goodbye, it was good while it lasted.

after putting Spybot search and destroy up it's now putting SDTools.exe error. how do I get Spybot from loading when I turn the PC on. I looked in Settings and didn't find anything to stop it. and now these SDTools.exe Errors are coming up. I'm not installing Kasperkey and I'm uninstalling Spybot.

It seems the clean reinstall option worked. Let's wait 2 weeks to see if it stays like that. What do I do with the "OldFireFox" folder after that? Keep it? Delete it? Thank you for that.

The two folders I mentioned are probably the only ones that would be of value. However, since you have a live specimen of the evil infection, I might ask you to send it to me. Just have to think about a safe way to do that!

Everything still seems to be working. Only thing that isn't are my Facebook games. They's been freezing since FireFox 39.somthing or other. so I have to use Google Gnome to play those games.

I'm not sure what is happening with your Flash games.

We know that some games do not with with the "asynchronous loading" setting, which was set to false in Firefox 39 but set to true in Firefox 40. You can turn that setting off using a "hotfix" available on the Add-ons site. Your Firefox should eventually load it automatically if you haven't disabled updates, but you can load it manually now to see whether it helps: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/firefox-hotfix/

Otherwise, there are a range of possible Flash issues, some involving Firefox settings and some involving Flash settings. This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with the Flash Player plugin. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) If you have any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware acceleration in Flash: right-click the media in the player and choose Settings, then the first mini-tab and uncheck the box to use hardware acceleration.

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista and higher)

The protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

• Ctrl+Shift+a
• "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

Hi drgnslyr, I see, you're stuck with version 7 of the Java plugin. Since that is a separate install from Firefox, and isn't essential for most sites, I think we can set that to one side in resolving the "Ads by name" issue.

So far, a week and firefox is ok. 1 week to go.  ;)

Ok, last question for this question. Just thought of it. If I export my bookmarks from this new un NAME de firefox and I send the bookmark file to a pc (with Windows Vista) will it infect the windows vista firefox and the rest of the PC or is the NAME thing just on this PC?
