Youtube links doubling up?

I have just noticed an odd situation that cropped up yesterday. When I click a link on Youtube, it seems to open the link twice, meaning that when I would normally hit the back button to watch a different video on a channel, it opens the same video again, meaning I have to hit back another time to get back to where I was. I don't know if this is due to a glitch and might be fixed by doing a reset or if this is just because I'm on an older version of Firefox due to how old my computer is and the fact that it doesn't seem to be able to handle the newer versions properly anymore. (I'm still using 28, and no longer simply due to my dislike of the new interface, though that is still an issue. My machine is over 13 years old and looking back, I'm surprised that it runs Firefox 28 at all.)

I am including a screenshot of what I am seeing, which can be seen by looking at the links that right clicking on the back arrow shows. As you can see, the doubling up is happening both on Youtube's videos and some parts of Youtube itself. This does not seem to be occurring anywhere else that I visit. Not sure why though. Is this on my end or theirs? Again, this doesn't occur anywhere else I go on the net. Curiously, it did not start happening till after I had visited tvtropes.org, but I have everything but the website itself and one font that the site runs on blocked as far as scripts go. I also ran a check for malware on my machine just in case, and came up clean. Dunno if that will help, but I figured the more you guys know, the better you can try to answer the question. For all I know, this might be happening on other later versions of the browser as well.

I can recommend that you update to the latest version of Firefox. I do understand that there was no malware detected, however there have been many changes since this version. You might be able to toggle the awesome bar by unchecking one of the suggestions. I believe its History, Tabs, and bookmarks that are listed when you type into the awesomebar. If one of the links disappears that might be causing it.

However you also mentioned when you hit the back button that it will go back to the same page. Try to right click on the back button to select the page previous as a work around.

It's still happening even on version 40.0.2, as I tried it, being the latest version, on another machine running the same operating system as my desktop. So it's not the operating system, and it's not affecting the only other web browser the machine had (google chrome.) I even asked a friend to check it out on their machine which sadly has only internet explorer. So whatever the cause is, it's either in the website itself, or something in the browsers is causing it. Possibly due to recent changes in how the website has been set up. My friend's machine runs either 7 or 8.1 (I forget which) and I tried to use an up to date version of the browser on w windows 7 professional laptop. Same thing happens. This was not the case a few days ago, so I'm not sure what's going on. I have a friend who also runs the most up to date version of Firefox, and I plan to ask him if he's having the same issue. Just to make sure that it's not just something unique to the computers I have in my apartment or the shared computers downstairs in the building.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

If safe mode is not helpful, you might also try places maintenance the add on.

Actually, the machine I tried the most up to date version on wasn't running any extensions, add-ons, or hardware acceleration, so far as I can tell, and this was still occurring. I have recently been told that youtube has changed it's setup to some kind of tablet interface thing, and that might be the issue.

I might be inclined to recommend to update to 39 since older versions are not supported.
