A folder is missing from my bookmarks list. How do I get it back?

I tried the recovery from backup procedure and was able to locate the file but I can get it mounted in my book mark list. This happened once before and I remember doing something with a file called "json".

Do you have the back up file something.json ? then restore it again

At some point, Firefox started compressing the automatic backup files, so now they have the extension .jsonlz4 instead of .json -- and they are no longer human readable.

As you may know, using the Restore feature will completely replace your existing bookmarks with the contents of that backup file. If you want to preserve anything you've added since the date of the backup, you can add some steps to the process:

  1. (Optional) Export current bookmarks: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
  2. Restore your older backup: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer -- use the Choose File item to point Firefox to the old file
  3. (Optional) Import the current bookmarks: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
  4. (Optional) Reorganize the imported bookmarks into logical locations (they might be in an Imported Bookmarks folder on the menu or in Unsorted bookmarks)

But... maybe it's not necessary. The most common reason for a missing folder is accidentally dragging and dropping it into another folder. The different part is finding it.

The easiest way is to export your bookmarks to an HTML format file that you can open in Firefox for easy reference (as a web page), and then use Find (Ctrl+f) to locate the folder in the page. From that you can discover where it is in the folder hierarchy.

Can you track it down?

If you tend to do a lot of bookmark reorganizing, consider installing the Show Parent Folder extension. It adds a column to the Library dialog showing the name of the folder containing of a bookmark. You can change a setting to make it show the parent of the parent, etc., so you can find it in the hierarchy.

To edit its settings, use its Options button on the Add-ons page. This would be in a normal tab, not in the Library dialog. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right look for Show Parent Folder and click its Options button.
