Did you already disable the protected mode feature? That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. There is a hidden setting to disable it; I suggest trying this for a day to see whether it helps:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste flash and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode preference to switch its value from false to true.

This might not take effect until all Flash has been unloaded for a few minutes, or you close Firefox.


One of your crash signatures (_SEH_prolog4) reminded me of a thread where a user had very persistent problems with Flash on YouTube if Webroot and LastPass were both installed. It seems you run Norton, so that thread probably is not directly relevant.


Would you consider trying the "Extended Support Release" version of Flash instead of version 18? Adobe is keeping it up-to-date with security fixes, but some recently added Flash features would be missing.

if you want to try that, you will need to first use Adobe's uninstaller to remove the current version (link in: Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems), and then get version 13.0.0.309 from this page (scroll down about 2/3 of the way):

Choose either the EXE or MSI for "plugin-based browsers".

No, I have already uninstalled and re-installed the Adobe Flash player and this did not solve the problem. Adobe Flash works fine for me on Internet Explorer, but it continually crashes with Firefox. Any other suggestions?

From your crash report we find that there is a Mindspark Toolbar plugin installed on your browser. It will be in your Addons > Plugins section. You need to uninstall it. Its malware.

I got rid of the Mindspark and other malware, but the Adobe Flash crashing continues on, just the same. Any other ideas?

Are there any security repercussions from disabling protected mode? Considering the frequent hacks for Adobe and Flash, the idea of disabling anything that is offering security is not my idea of a good thing to do. What exactly is protected mode?

Hi Pattit, protected mode does have security benefits because it runs some Flash components with reduced privileges. For example, this prevents those processes from modifying the Windows registry. This technical article describes it all in more detail: http://blogs.adobe.com/security/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html That said, the modern Flash exploits must be designed to bypass protected mode, so it may not be very useful for the problems in the news.
