Just to confirm:

Did you create a JSON backup of all the bookmarks?

Did you backup the places.sqlite file?

What files did you restore to the new computer?

If you did then restoring the places.sqlite would have included the bookmarks and the history.

Did you use Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Backup in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

What do you see if you open this file in a Firefox tab?

Make sure that the bookmarks backup file has the correct (lowercase) file extension:

  • .html for a HTML backup (needs to be imported and merges bookmarks)
  • .json for a JSON backup (needs to be restored and replaces bookmarks)

You can check the file type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties. If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "Firefox > New Tab > Open File" or "File > Open File". A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup shows as a web page with clickable links.

A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":
An HTML backup starts with: <!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>

Judging from the appearance of the data, that is a "Backup" file, which uses that JSON format, instead of an "Export" file. So to restore a backup, you use Restore instead of Import.

But before you restore, have you saved any new bookmarks that you can't afford to lose? A Restore completely replaces your existing bookmarks. If you need to preserve something, then do the optional steps on this list:

  1. (Optional) Export recently-added bookmarks: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
  2. Restore your older backup: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer -- use the Choose File item to point Firefox to the old file; if Firefox can't restore it, you may need to change the file extension to .json and try again.
  3. (Optional) Import the recently-added bookmarks: Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
  4. (Optional) Reorganize the imported bookmarks into logical locations (they might be in an Imported Bookmarks folder on the menu or in Unsorted bookmarks)

Hi havard91, what is the full name and extension of the file you are trying to restore? The file extension needs to be .json so you might need to modify it. If Windows is set to hide some extensions, please change the setting using the steps in this article so that you see whether there is an extra extension such as .txt on the end and more accurately work with file names: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions
