Every time I receive a junk mail, Thunderbird goes to "not responding" mode for a while. How can I stop this?

Kuphostiwe

Thunderbird goes into a "not responding" freeze up every time I receive a "junk" mail. It stays like that until the email finally goes to the "junk" folder. This started happening since I installed Thunderbird on my new computer, never happened on my old computer (both are Acers). How can I make it stop, please?

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode - Win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode - XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode Does the problem go away?

OK, when I started Thunderbird in "safe mode" the problem still persisted. When I re-started the computer in "safe mode" and Thunderbird in "safe mode", the problem was gone. So it seems there is something with Windows causing the problem? Do you know what it might be? Thanks, Donna

Most likely AVG is the culprit. Don't let AVG scan your Thunderbird profile folder. And don't let AVG scan incoming and outgoing messages and attachments.

For more information on the location of the profile folder see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Actually, I thought that solved the problem, but it didn't. Is there any "security" scan that Windows 8.1 does? Because the only difference in this computer and my last one is this is version 8.1. My last computer was an ACer on Windows 8 and it never had Thunderbird problems.

Not sure what you did. If you need help with AVG please check with their support or ask in an AVG forum.

Thanks anyway. I am pretty sure it is not AVG. I have tried everything with their software. I appreciate your help.

To deadant70,

Since I moved to my new Win8.1 computer a few months ago, I have the same problem with TB. As soon as I get a piece of Junk mail, TB faints until it clears away the Junk message. Sometimes TB is not responsive for up to a minute while trying to eliminate one piece of Junk...and I seem to get about 100 spams a day.

I have turned off every Junk Option including the Setting, "Move new Junk messages to..." I have "Reset Training Data" a number of times, but the Junk filtering lives on. Other people have complained that the Junk filter in TB is out of control. See the thread "How do I completely disable TB's attempts to tag/flag/judge email as junk".

I have spent time looking elsewhere, particularly Ad-Aware, my AV program, and Windows Defender. All a waste of time. Safe mode in TB does nothing. Maybe this is a Win8.1 problem for TB. Whatever the reason, the code for Junk Filtering in TB is causing it to hang up. I hope someone in the development team is reading this.

Dear Donna,

I still think we have the same problem.

As of today, TB has not fainted once! I finally figured out how to turn off every Junk Filter in TB and the program is now stable. I really like the convenience of having Junk effortlessly removed from my Inbox, but that function seems to have crippled the program (on my computer).

Forget all the helpful suggestions pointing elsewhere. Instead, disable all the Junk Filtering Options and Settings in TB and see if the program functions without delays.

That wasn't exactly the question. Are you compacting folders on a regular basis?

Dear Steve,

I know this is "freeware", so we should be grateful for whatever we get. But I don't think the developers are keeping up with the changes in operating systems.

What, in your opinion, is a mail client program that works well.

StanleyKPatz, Crap is still crap. If something does not work any price including the download and uninstall time is too high a price. Thanks for your words that don't solve any problems only waste more time. NOT
