Ok, so this has been a repetitive problem for me. I recently removed some light malware, trovi from my browser, I managed to change my homepage to about:newtab and now it works, but my search engine is still Yahoo. I tried

1. Going to about:config and changing keyword.URL into its default, by resetting it, it doesn't work. Also, more recently, there is no keyword.URL in about:config.

2. Resetting all objects with the word " Search" in them in about:config.

3. Disabling suspicious addons/extensions and starting Firefox in Safemode.

4. Deleting ALL cookies.

Any other methods will be appreciated, and tryed, in the end, if all fails, I will just reset my browser, but I am dreading that because I have a bunch of info that will be hard to replace on it.

Specifically, were you able to reset browser.search.defaultenginename in about:config ?

cor-el, this only helps you with the trovi unistallation, which I managed to do alone with the site http://info.trovi.com/Uninstall . I do not know if the yahoo search is part of trovi or not, but I removed its effect on my browser.

You can try to delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

cor-el, I have done that, and it didn't work, the search engine is still set to Yahoo.

Here is a picture of my Profile Folder, or atleast the bottom half of it.

As you can see, I deleted the search.json files and the other .json files listed, and still no change.

Reset Search did nothing, Yahoo is still my default search engine.

The same in safe mode?

Try this:

Diego, yes, I tried Safemode and it is still Yahoo. And, oddly enough, Yahoo is still my search even after I deleted the file in searchplugins.

Did you try reset Firefox or create a new profile?

Diego, yes, after running Firefox in a new profile, the search engine is still Yahoo. Also, Reset Firefox wouldn't do anything except delete my data, because if a new profile doesn't work, then why would basically making a new profile and deleting my default one work out?

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type about:config. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter browser.search.order Tell us what is displayed.

We have recently seen reports about a Community Toolbar extension causing this issue with not being able to open a new tab.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
