Bookmarks from original HDD
Hi I have recently installed a new HDD with a refreshed windows OS (7). I have searched for how I can copy my bookmarks to my new profile, however the old one does not appear to list the bookmarks I had saved, so I wasnt confident in copying anything.
Am I missing something (should the old bookmarks name be there)?
Either way if someone could guide me, it would be much appreciated.
thanks

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

In your profile folder,
- The places.sqlite file stores your bookmarks and history. You can copy this file over the one in your current profile to replace your current bookmarks and history with the old set.
- The bookmarkbackups subfolder contains automatic backups of your bookmarks. You can restore one of these backups, replacing your current set of bookmarks with the old one.
The Firefox profile folder is located here:
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
Note that the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Window 7+ versions and the "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K are hidden folders.
Hi GingerBread man and cor-el,
Thanks for your notes.
Yes, I had previously read the guides and locate where the bookmarks were supposed to be...however as mentioned earlier I cannot see any names of bookmarks I would have previously saved in any of the folders in the 'profile', so was not confident in copying any of these across.
Shouldn't i see the names of the bookmarks I had saved?
Appreciate further advise and clarification.
cheers

Did you find the Firefox profile folder and the bookmarkbackups folder?
Are there any JSON backups (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx.json) in this folder that you can use to restore the bookmarks?
You can also copy the places.sqlite file to the current Firefox profile folder.
Hi cor-el
Thanks for your note.
Yes I can see the *.json files in both the old and new profiles, but again have and had no confidence that these were the ones I had previously saved.
As per my prior question...'Shouldn't i see the names of the bookmarks I had saved? '
Given YOUR advises...is this safe to assume?

You can export the current bookmarks to an HTML file if you want to be able to merge them with bookmarks that you restore from the other computer and restore the most recent JSON backup from the other computer.
Hi cor-el,
Yes I am sure i can...or refer to the guide you have included.
However still uncertain and unclear as to if i should be able to identify these, and failing that, some confidence that the ones I had can be moved (merged...or) successfully.
Appreciate any further clairification the good folk out there may have

You can only find out if this brings the bookmarks from the other computer by restoring the JSON backup or by placing the places.sqlite file in the current Firefox profile folder.
Less than ideal.
But thanks
Note you may create additional Firefox profiles for test purposes. It may be useful to experiment in test profiles with copies of files instead of in the current important working profile.
You still need to take care however, so it is good working practice to use the suggested location and not delete or rename profiles once created. More details and explanations in my post
HI, I have followed the advise above, and resolved the issue in the main (got all my bookmarks back), however now I cannot add any (new ones not listed, nor does the display name appear when adding it). I have reinstalled firefox and this has not resolved.
As this is a related question to the above post, I was hoping someone could provide advise or perhaps point to the diagnostic tool, to indicate what is going on.
cheers
