I want to have a default download location with the ability to select an alternate location on any download, not to have the last download location remembered as the current save to location.

I have a primary folder to which I want to have the majority of my downloads go to, but on some occasions, I want a download to go to some other location. The current settings "Save files to" and "Always ask you where to save files" do not enable this capability.

Others have asked for this ability too.

I just had a Firefox update today and now when I save a pic or save a video it does a new really annoying drop-down notification at the top from the download icon area which stays there until I manually remove it. In the past I only saw an activity up there when I downloaded programs to my downloads folder, but not when I simply saved an image or video to my other locations. I do not want this stupid dropdown notification appearing, and it's getting bigger and bigger the more pics I save, how do I turn it off? It's ridiculous. I save videos from twitter and images like memes all the time and never have this happen, it just saves it and there is nothing more going on to worry about (which is what I want), it's only started today after the update so it's a new feature. I looked in about:config but I could not work out which setting it is so didn't touch anything. Thanks for your help.

I don't want the pdf to save to disk without my will when I open a pdf file from any website. Fire Fox saves the file first, then opens it for reading. How to change it? I want to read the pdf first and then decide what to do with it. This works similarly in Edge. FF is my main browser, I wouldn't want to change that, but I have too much garbage on my disk. every pdf is saved first, completely unnecessary.

I know Firefox recently changed some settings regarding automatic downloading of files, but I need to know how to stop Firefox from automatically downloading .pdf files that I view. Sometimes I just want to view a pdf without downloading the file. Firefox keeps automatically downloading the file, then after viewing it, I have to manually delete. I don't to do this! I just want to view the file and if I want to keep it, I'll save a copy. This is extremely annoying! Can I change the settings so that the file won't automatically save to my computer? Thanks

So I have my Download button visible all the time.

Yesterday, this suddenly started to happen.

When I download something, the list of Ongoing Downloads stayed open. It never did that before.

Any idea why and how to fix it?

Hi,

Up until very recently, I've been able to download files without issue. Every time it'd ask "do you want to open or save?". It's no longer doing that, and instead saves them by default. How do I revert this back to asking what I want to do?

Before the new update whenever I downloaded a file it would ask where to save the file to every time, now it just asks once then automatically saves any new files I download to the same folder as the previous ones, forcing me to then go to that folder and manually move it to the correct folders. Is there any way to change it back to the right way it was done before they decided to remove our choice? My setting is set to "Always ask you where to save files", with the emphasis on "Always".

Updating to version 98.0 onwards Firefox has started saving a copy of every pdf file I view (open) in my downloads folder.

My settings have not changed:

Tools->Settings->General->Applications: - pdf (application/download): Always ask - pdf (application/force-download): Always ask - pdf (application/pdf): Use Adobe Acrobat DC - pdf (application/x-download): Always ask

And when the "ask" dialog pops up, I choose "open".

I have tried all standard methods/troubleshooting, including resetting the handlers.json file.

The only way to avoid getting a copy in the downloads folder is if I choose "Open in Firefox" (application/pdf) instead of "Use Adobe Acrobat DC".

Any solution to this?

Thanks Michael

Hello Community.

I've selected an option to open PDF's in Firefox for preview. And if I wanted to download the PDF after preview, I simply clicked the downloab button from the preview app/tab. The files were downloaded with default filename and to the downloads folder without prompts. But since a while ago the dialog where the save location must be selected and filename given for the file opens up after the click of the download button.

How can I change it back to the previous behaviour without having to input filename and select the file download directory?

The behavior of FireFox saving PDF files has changed. I am using WIN10, FireFox 98.0.1 and have it setup to use windows default application and always ask where to save for PDFs.

BEFORE the problem: The PDF opens in Acrobat Pro IX. After clicking save I would be asked, where to save. I select the location to save the PDF. Then after this, subsequent PDFs downloaded would be saved to the last saved location. This process would repeat for a new website PDF load and save. This is the behavior I want now.

NOW with the problem: The PDF opens in Acrobat Pro IX. 1. Immediately, after a reboot, the save icon on Adobe is grayed out. I select save as and point to the desired directory. 2. For any subsequent PDF opened, the Adobe save icon is available. Files are saved to the desktop.

Please note I believe I once did get a popup asking where to save and I know I selected desktop. Since that selection I am no longer asked where to save.

Please note I have looked and tried some of the suggestions at: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-download-or-save-files#w_choose-a-different-download-folder

but some of this advice needs to be updated for the new FireFox version--ex no JSON file is found at the file location covered in the advice.

I believe this issue started after the last FireFox update. Please help me restore behavior listed above under “BEFORE the problem”. Thanks.

Hey, with the latest firefox update I have a problem dowloading pdf files from Whatsapp web. When downloading the pdf it automatically opens up in the same tab, effectively closing whatsapp web. Very annoying, especially when im trying to look at multiple files send in the chat, because every time i need to open whatsapp web again. Instead of opening the file in the same tab I would like it to open either in a new tab or a new window but can't find any settings option that would allow me to do so.

after the latest update, in settings, if i select for a specific file type "ask what to do" or "open", the firefox still download the file, not just open with that selected program. Why, and how can i disable the download when i want to open with program.

Before this update, worked fine, when i selected "open" option for a file, that opened the specific program and don't downloaded the file.

I know firefox version 98.0 changed how downloads work, but I have my settings for downloads set to "Always ask you where to save files" and specifically for PDF files, I have the action set to "Always ask". However, when I click download on a PDF file and then select "open with firefox" as the action option, the file not only opens in the browser, but also gets downloaded automatically without even allowing me to select where. Is this intended behavior? There are lots of times I just want to view a file and not actually download it, and this is quite annoying.

Steps to reproduce (FF 98.0.2 on Windows 10):

1) Set the Downloads directory to "Always ask you where to save files" (screenshot 1)

2) Set the handling choice for application/pdf to "Always ask" (screenshot 2)

3) Click on a link to a PDF file

4) In the dialog that pops up, choose "Open in Firefox" (screenshot 3)

Desired behaviour:

The PDF opens in Firefox, with a copy temporarily saved in the web cache (not in the filesystem).

Actual behaviour:

The PDF opens in Firefox, but a copy is saved in the greyed-out "default" directory from screenshot 1 (R:\Temp): see screenshot 4.

This seems wrong for two reasons:

i) The documented behaviour of Firefox is to save downloaded PDFs in the web cache, so that they get cleared when the cache is cleared.

ii) In screenshot 1, I've instructed Firefox to always ask me where to save files. But FF has instead assumed it can save files in a directory without asking me.

This can be sort-of worked around by changing the handling choice to "Open in Firefox". In that case, PDFs do seem to be stored in the cache, not in the filesystem. Then if I want to save a PDF, I can manually save it from the tab it opens in.

But is there a better way to fix this?

How to make attached files in email open up without requiring saving the file before viewing

Recently, I purchased some software to scrub my hard drive due to my Dell Desktop running slow. That is when the way I normally access emailed attached files changed. Normally, if I receive a WORD or EXCEL (MS file) in email, I can open the email and access the attachment without having to download and save to my desktop or hard drive. I have changed all settings in the Privacy Area / Trust Area of MS but this did not change anything. MS Representatives stated I would need to use Outlook to make this work, but I know it will work without using Outlook. I think the Scrubbing / Cleaning software I purchased changed a setting with my email for safety purposes since there is risk in opening a file directly from email. Any suggestions on how to change back to how this worked previously - without having to download and save the file? Thanks for your help.

I want to open online PDFs in Acrobat. I've modified the setting is in Firefox to "Always ask," yet when I click on a PDF it opens as it should AND Firefox automatically downloads the file to the Downloads folder even though that destination is greyed out in settings and the radial button for "Always Ask" is selected. How can I block this activity in either Firefox or in the registry.

NOTE: ALL OF THE SETTINGS IN FIREFOX SAY "ALWAYS ASK." This a software bug in Firefox, not a user switch setting. This activity began today (March 11, 2022) after months of normal, expected activity. I've reset Firefox and I've done a complete uninstall and clean install and this still happens.

Firefox 98 no longer giving option to open or save file, it now just saves files to my Download folder, which I don't want. I use firefox for work, and I have to download literally hundreds of files, mainly generated excel spreadsheets, a day. The ability to have the option to just open the file from the temp folder that gets cleared when firefox closed was great. Now I have to fiddle with about:config to get back even a portion of what I was able to do before. currently i have browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel set to false, which helps, but there are just certain file types that ignore this setting, such as zip files and pdf files. Those still auto download to the Download folder, then I have to go hunt for them if I need to attach them to emails. It's a BAD feature. How do I revert it to do what it did pre ver 98?

PDF behaviour is pretty arbitrary.

In my settings I have 'Always Ask' for PDFs and 'Always ask' for Downloads: where to save files.

And yet - if I export a file from Google Docs as PDF (an action which I would expect to trigger an 'always ask' even if that were not the setting I had already set) - it does not ask; it just downloads to my home directory (which is not a directory specified anywhere as a preference for where to download to).

I am aware that this is probably Google's being creepy and exploiting some setting or lack of setting, but firefox should protect me against this and when multiple settings are set to 'always ask', firefox should, y'know, maybe ... ask.

Seriously - why is firefox making it the user's job to work out what weird exceptions to an explicit policy should be dealt with as a separate case? If the download and save routines are activated then, if the settings are set to 'ask' - it should [profanity] ASK.
