Just today, firefox began slowing down and soft crashing for minutes at a time. During this time, I can interact with websites, but it doesn't change the visuals or show that anything has changed. new tabs open but don't show up, youtube video audio plays but the screen remains fixed. Firefox usage for just 7 tabs is well over 5 gigatybes of ram and 10-20% cpu at all times.

I attempted everything on the help page, including: killing and restarting firefox, updating firefox, updating windows, restarting my computer, killing firefox and rebooting again, disabling extensions, and updating graphics drivers.

after rebooting with the new windows update, firefox ran smoothly for a brief minute and showed normal cpu/ram usage, but quickly climbed back up to pre reboot numbers.

We have an internal review screen in our company to review data using pdf.js and viewer.js that we customized with a few extra menu items. It has been working great for years. Now, Firefox updates to version 90.0 and it displays blank pages for pdf files. This did not happen in any version up to 89.0.2. It is happening on multiple computers. We can still load this screen in Chrome and Edge with no issue. On one affected computer, I uninstalled Firefox, downloaded and installed version 89.0.2 and it worked again. (I had to turn off automatic updates.)

I have used Firefox as my main browser for years now and I really like it. However, for the past 5 or 6 months I haven't been able to sign into my online banking at all with Firefox. I have to use Chrome. It allows me to put in my username and password but then it just takes me to another sign in view.

Recently I was on another site, trying to purchase a few items and it would not allow me to use the "add to cart" button, only the buy now. But then when I went back to the products, if I added something else to the cart, it wiped out the first thing I had added.

In both of these cases, I have gone to Chrome and used the functions and signed in with no issues. I don't want to have to use different browsers for different things. Is there anything you can advise?

The sites are: https://www.simplii.com/en/home.html and https://amaranthstoneware.ca/

My Firefox is up to date (just today and I tested the bank sign in again, with my fingers crossed).

Thank you.

I had Firefox 89 when this morning I could not watch my Amazon videos because I kept getting a message saying that I needed to upgrade my Chrome browser. Since I never use Chrome, I decided to check if Firefox was at the latest version. When I clicked into options, I saw a notice saying that Firefox is not my default browser. I thought that somehow something had messed up my settings since I made Firefox my default browser when I first bought this computer over a yea ago, so I clicked the button to set it as default. That took me to Windows settings which showed that Firefox was already my default browser.

Since then I have restarted the computer multiple times; upgraded to Firefox 90 and restarted; deleted Chrome; reset Firefox; gone to Windows settings and changed my default browser to Edge. then later reset it back to Firefox.

The Firefox options STILL indicate that Firefox is not my default browser.

What is going on? Does anyone have any ideas?

I first noticed this after I could not play my Amazon videos this morning -- which I can play now after having reset Firefox -- but I am worried that this will affect other things.

I can no longer log into my vudu.com account using my Firefox Browser, can this be fixed, or do I have to use Edge now? There are other websites that I could never log into with Firefox, but I consider those sites that I don't have to use, but I have a movie library on vudu.com, I pretty much have to use vudu.com. I never had a problem logging into vudu.com before, it has to be one of the last couple of Firefox updates.

We have a page that showes total work times of employees on a timeline which holds data for one year. This totals in 106219 nodes on that page. Previous versions of FireFox did not had issues with this, other browsers (Opera, Chrome, Edge) have also no issues and render the page in about 2 - 3 seconds. Not so Version 90.0.2 (32 bit). It now takes 4 minutes to render this page completely. Trying to debug this is impossible cause during rendering the browser is not responsive at all. Is this a bug that sneaked in or what can we do? This happens on fresh installs of Windows 10 with fresh installs of FireFox, that said it's not something that could be reset or cleaned etc. Any Ideas as to why FireFox struggles now with above mentioned number of nodes as oposed to earlier versions?

When I start Firefox for the first time, and click Bookmarks, it takes a little while to respond and populate the bookmarks list.

I've created a video to show the problem. You'll see that when I clicked Bookmarks, it becomes unresponsive for a sec or so before slowly populating the list.

I'm not sure when it started, but it was recently. What can I try to troubleshoot it? It behaves the same way in Firefox Safe Mode.

I have this strange issue that cropped up within the past couple of months, without any known configuration or behaviour change. When I have Google set as the search engine in Firefox (FF) for macOS (various versions, including the latest 90.0.2 at time of writing), at a certain point after FF has been running (ie not immediately, but say within the hour) clicking on Google search results link results in a blank tab with literally nothing at all in the Inspector > Network or > Console etc for that tab. Copying the Google URI from the address bar and pasting it into another fresh tab in FF also results in the same problem. Copying the same Google URI into Chrome or any other browser, on the same OS at the same time, does not result in any problem (page loads fine).

I have tried all of the following, and none have made any immediate or long term difference:

  • Disabling all addons at the time of the problem
  • Performing a FF reset
  • Uninstalling and re-installing FF
  • Logging into Google in FF
  • Logging our of Google in FF
  • Logging into FF with a FF account
  • Logging out of any FF account
  • Tweaking a couple of about:config settings relating to FF domain stove-piping, since the problem started roughly around the time that was released
  • Building an entirely new PC (previous was macOS 11.4.x and 11.5 on Intel; current is macOS 11.5 on Apple Silicon) and building an entire new user profile from scratch, with all apps incl FF freshly installed
  • Using a different search engine (DuckDuckGo works fine, consistently, but when I change it back to Google the same problem starts up again after a while - eg within the hour)

This just feels like a bug (like nothing at all displayed in any part of the Inspector after a new tab is loaded with a Google link) but if that's true then

  1. I can't be the only person in the world seeing this; and
  2. It's surprising that it has persisted across a number of FF versions over a couple of months

I'm really keen to see this resolved because I do need to be able to use Google for search, and I do *want* to be able to continue to use FF (although this is unfortunately a significant head-wind to actually being able to continue doing so).

For the past several updates, it seems that Mozilla is becoming a form of bloatware, trying to be all things to all people. Many of us have been involved in the use of computers for 30 years or so, have got our systems to do what we wish to do - we are not gamers, not webpage entrepreneurs, code-writers etc. who marvel in making programme monstrosities.

My system is set up for the disabled - employing VoIP, IP etc. and you f*k it up with your 'forced' changes - yes, they are supposed to be optional, but you throttle and throttle until we have to push 'yes' to update and then we have to trim away what is necessary - in my instance - tools for the disabled of which you don't seem to give a merde. You are all in your own little worlds and don't realize the breadth of the Mozilla community and who uses it - PARTICULARLY FOR SURVIVAL NEEDS - who do not fit into your preoccupations with becoming bigger and better.

Perhaps you might come out with a slimmed down - remove the McD fats and salt - version so that the rest of us can continue to use Mozilla without it causing out computers from shutting down - which has been a problem since the past 3 updates.

When going to a site with FF, 90 which has partial secure information FF still allows access even though the site is not completely https. this should not be allowed HTTPS only should work if the site is completely compliant with HTTPS.

The example site is https://www.brampton.ca//en/online-services/pages/bramcams.aspx

If you click on one of the camera images with "https mode in all windows only" set, no image is displayed and the icon suggest HTTPS but the site is only partial https.

With "https mode in all windows" no configured you get the secure lock icon with the exclamation. see enclosed.

I want to opt out of the new (slower than molasses) "trusted partner redirect" Firefox gave me ONE chance for 3 seconds before closing the option window.

This has resulted in slowing down an already too slow event in Firefox. This is why users are going to chrome.

It's a great idea as an option. Not a great idea to force it on users.

Thanks for your help,

Hello,

At first I thought it was a tired Arch Manjaro install that was perhaps the issue. Now that I've done fresh installs of Arch (Manjaro & Arco), Ubuntu (KDE, Gnome, & XFCE) on both my workstation and laptop, I can say it's not my Hardware or OS. So why is Firefox crashing all the time? Mid chat conversations, etc. Again, fresh OS install and zero Add-Ons installed. I can't use Firefox, even if I badly wanted too when it tanks on me all the time.

I just installed the latest v90 upgrade. I get at least 5 sometimes as many as 7 instances of Firefox running simultaneously. Look at my screen shot of the Task Manager...Holy Sh*t! I attempted to downgrade back to v89, but Mozilla has made this option unbearable ...have to recreate your profile, all your passwords, cookies and bookmarks, an incredible hassle. Stuff like this just shouldn't happen.

Definitely NOT a well-thought out release.

Guess I'll be migrating to Chrome sooner than I thought!?

Apologies for re-posting, I asked about this issue before https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1323826, but it was archived without any response :(

In an answer to this question: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1318109#answer-1376159 cor-el warned that using OS authentication (for example, TouchID on a Mac) for passwords instead of a Primary Password is actually not really safe because it doesn't encrypt logins in logins.json and it would be possible to extract them by running: prompt("Logins",JSON.stringify(Services.logins.getAllLogins())); Now I am a bit confused because for storing Credit Cards the default is, of course, using OS authentication (I don't think there's an option to set a password instead). So I am wondering, is that safe, i.e., is the credit card information encrypted that I can retrieve with my TouchID (even without a Primary Password)?

And if so, would anybody be able to explain the differences between these two approaches and why the Firefox developers chose one for Logins/Passwords but the other for Credit Cards.
