I have "important" machines that haven't been upgraded to Quantum, and I have throw-away set ups where I've tried Quantum, and it's really terrible. It seems that yet-again there is some new something added to FF (e.g., new essential UI control) where there's no explanation on what it does and how you use it. Chrome, of course, is much much much worse with UI navigation that is very difficult to understand. Things like:

- Seeing a list of open tabs. - Reloading a page. - Settings. - Locating cookies that I need to remove (because youtube has some limitation, so youtube cookies need to be flushed every month or so). - Inspecting cookies. - Discovering passwords/accounts that I've used before. - Useful add-ons that, largely, make FF look like that way it used to look. - Useful add-ons that block ads (ublock origin) - Useful add-ons that deal with Flash/etc. content (Chrome is completely useless on this) - Useful add-ons that deal with screwy memory usage that I have no control over (e.g., The Great Suspender) - Not having to change add-ons because of incompatibilities.

What FF developers don't understand is: a finely tuned Windows (or Mac) dialog box is much much much more useful than anything Javascript and HTML can do, e.g., even with the Windows 10 new UI paradigm, there's good ole Windows XP dialog boxes just a click or two away (like FF settings), which are easier to navigate because they are intuitive and repeatable (think: how can I describe this to someone over the phone who hasn't used this before).

I've supported many users over decades. It is very rare that a new FF feature will cause a user to say "hey, that's useful" - the typical response to FF upgrades is "it doesn't work the way it did, and the new way of working makes it harder". FF doesn't explain what Use Cases they are addressing and the rationale for changes, the changes just come. But now with Quantum, it is intolerable.

I just read some other incompatibilities it making the "Quantum" leap, such as bookmarks and passwords require manual important. Really? You're gonna make millions of users do this manually?

And two decades later, why is printing still broken? You can render all the elements on the screen, and you know how to display the whole page when I scroll up/down, so why can't you guys figure out how to send that to PDF or to a printer? (Screenshots don't work because they are low-res.) You can't figure out how to display a virtual page, tiled as separate pages (via a page description language like PDF or PS), and then send them to the printer driver?

I'm not sure what all the rush is on browser speed: for most users, their browser is idle >99% of the time as they read the page. But for all this speed, we pay for it in zillion little changes over time that just add up to: I don't want any more changes, I get no benefit from them, and there is huge/significant disruption having to reconfigure the browser every couple of months (heck, we're up to version 60 now!), but we tolerate these unwelcome changes because:

(1) the users are scared of security issues that can take over our machines, so changes must be Good;

(2) the users feel "I'm older, and this might be younger people who need all this change" and these users compensate with "ok, even though I'm older, I don't want to feel like I'm Old and Cranky, and so I'll be hip/cool/whatever by accepting the latest changes that surely must come from the younger folk, even though they don't help me and make my browser harder to use".

In other words, given the choice between consistency and usability vs. speed, I'd take the former.

Maybe there are developers who would like to stick with pre-Quantum FF and focus upon stability and usability, rather the introduction a new UI every handful of months?

How can we keep FF 56?

I have a corrupt Windows profile that refuses to be repaired and I can't boot into it, so I need to grab what I can from the Windows Profile files and/or registry , I am particularly interested in the bookmarks, history but also the look and feel customisation of the toolbars etc.

I am aware that some of the data will be in the following folder

C:\Users\User1\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default C:\Users\User1\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default

Are there any other folders that need to be copied?

Once copied to a new windows profile is it enough to rename the xxxxxx.default folders above to yyyyyyy.default filename for the new profile or are there registry and/or filename changes required within other files?

Is there a utility that may make this easier?

I could find no way of registering this major complaint, and was only further irritated by the obtuse approach to feedback ("Firefox makes me sad/makes me happy") - I'm posting this hear so that actual people will read it, others will be about to websearch its discussion, and something might change:

When Firefox has had trouble loading, it sometimes displays an innocuous looking dialogue box asking whether you'd like to run in safe mode or "refresh Firefox". What it is actually asking is if you would like to wipe Firefox, erase your profile, return to factory settings. I previously made the infuriating mistake of choosing refresh because that term is understood to mean 'reload' e.g. refresh a web page, like switching something off then on again—not erasing something and replacing it with a blank empty slate.

As this happened a while back and I'm not risking it again by clicking the option, I don't recall what the full description was but it certainly did not make clear what "refreshing" entailed and to have it presented as a solution for something so minor and nonproblematic as loading slower than usual only ensures more and more users will fall victim to this. Considering the browser defaults to warning the user when they're closing tabs, it's absurd that such a nuclear option is suggested so flippantly and without transparency.

Hi, my MSN outlook.live.com email just shows a blank page. I noticed this on 8-16-19 I was opening a link that took me to a google service rating site. After I rated the business I then went back to my email and just a blank page shows. I did remove all cookies, recent history, but not all history. It did not help so I updated from v.47 to v56 and thought that might clear it up, but it did not help. I can use it on IE v11. Not sure if I can try something else or not, before doing a refresh, another update or uninstall and reinstall. I am 72 now so was looking for a easy fix, just don't remember stuff like I used to? Security should never think for the user. It should give option atleast like ("NEVER AGAIN"). Bad thing is that security treats every user as bunch of id**ts.

PS: I was seeking the support by Google search engine so I'm sure there was no solution for that.

Thanks for your support.

Firefox Tab Crashing Randomly

Firefox 56.0.2 Crash Report [@ mozilla::dom::workers::serviceWorkerScriptCache::`anonymous namespace'::CompareNetwork::OnStreamComplete ]

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/01442438-1105-4efa-b3a7-06a2f0180916

So... I know I have a bit of an older version of firefox... skipping right over that...

I had the strangest experience today. I was on https://mangapark.me and suddenly I got a crashed tab error. I don't normally get these and when I do its normally a very rare fluke. This time though it just kept happening. I had read about 10-20 pages on the site before this started to happen. I restarted firefox... restarted the computer... kept happening.

Stranger is that it started to happen on Interpals, Facebook, and YouTube... but then stopped... then started... then stopped again.... It also happened on other manga websites but now has stopped again.... now it seems to be very only mangapark.me

So... in the process of trying to figure out what was going on I loaded firefox in a separate instance and profile and for a good while it worked just fine... then the same issues....

Any ideas?

I occasionally double click to drag an open window to a new location. When I double click in the top bar of the firefox browser, any open windows are put away, not closed...which destroys the link, but put away like clicking on the minus sign in the upper right blue bar that is next to the "fill page" icon and the red X that destroys the link. This may be a property of MS8.1 POS or it might be Firefox. I am sick and tired of having to open all these windows one by one each time my finger "stutters" producing a rapid double click. I have tried changing single click and double click response delays, but that does not help either. The morons that wrote MS8.1 load the keystrokes instantly without checking timing. Also, does anyone know of an operating system that emulates the MS NT system without all the F------ "features" that pervade later OSes??? Many Thanks for your suggestions!!!

Often I am on a page and it will hang for a bit, so I resorted to having the Browser Console open when visiting some of the pages where I have noticed it happening to see what if any errors are presented in the console that might shed light on that.

Well, I can't say I didn't get what I asked for, hundreds of thrown exceptions but frankly I can't make sense of them and when trying to research them, all Mozilla says is that its a generic error where we shove anything we don't know how to explain, so that's immensely helpful - not.

So I am hoping someone here has seen this or at least knows how to figure out what it is and what's causing it beyond, its a generic error for things we don't know and so therefore there is not actual helpful resource :)

In particular, it says it is from ThreadSafeDevToolsUtils.js:88 but looking at it provides literally no helpful insight.

Here is the error (hundreds of them, but I'll give you just one copy):

"Handler function threw an exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsITraceableChannel.setNewListener]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/webconsole/network-monitor.js :: _setupResponseListener :: line 1262" data: no] Stack: _setupResponseListener@resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/webconsole/network-monitor.js:1262:28 _createNetworkEvent@resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/webconsole/network-monitor.js:1138:5 _onRequestHeader@resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/webconsole/network-monitor.js:1163:5 NetworkMonitor.prototype.observeActivity<@resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/webconsole/network-monitor.js:1015:7 exports.makeInfallible/<@resource://gre/modules/commonjs/toolkit/loader.js -> resource://devtools/shared/ThreadSafeDevToolsUtils.js:109:14 Line: 1262, column: 0"

/**

* Report that |who| threw an exception, |exception|.
*/

exports.reportException = function reportException(who, exception) {

 const msg = `${who} threw an exception: ${exports.safeErrorString(exception)}`;
 dump(msg + "\n");
 if (typeof console !== "undefined" && console && console.error) {
-->   console.error(msg);
 }

};

Does anyone have a clue what is going on here and can help clarify things for me please?
