When opening a second FF browser window, the cursor does default to being active for input in the search box, I have to place it there manually by mouse click, or change the way I open the 2nd browser window. Let me explain.... I have noticed for a while now that the cursor active position in 2nd, 3rd, and more additional FF browser windows is not placed inside the search box, middle of the page, so when I start typing nothing happens. I have to manually move it to the search box and click it in there, with the mouse. Mildly frustrating? I tried searching on here for some info on why it only happens on extra opened FF windows. Found something about it moving to the URL address bar, but the chosen solution did nothing for my "extra browser windows, cursor not in search box" problem. I am on a Win10 laptop, fully up to date software, and am using FF also fully up to date. Some FF add ons, but I don't think they're the problem, because I've had them installed forever, and this problem seems to be a more recent irritant. Couple of months, at least. So, after doing some testing and trying some modifications in "about:config" parameters cursor/search/tab/windows with no luck, I stumbled on a work around. I have my chosen browsers (and some other apps) pinned to the Windows taskbar for quick access. To start my first FF window, I click the FF icon that's pinned to the taskbar. It starts, and the cursor is active/focued inside the search box, which is what I expect and desire. Now, if I start a second browser window by right clicking the pinned FF taskbar icon, and start a new window by clicking "Open new window", when the window opens, and I start typing (expecting the cursor to be focused inside the search box), nothing happens, no typing input, and I have to stop, and manually click inisde the search box to get the cursor in there, and functional. What I discovered from my casual testing is, if I start a second browser window by right clicking the pinned taskbar FF icon, and select the "Firefox" option to open a new FF browser window, when the new FF window opens, the cursor IS focused and functional inside the search box. I can start typing immediately and the text appears inside the main search box, as expected and desired. I have no idea why the cursor works when I start secondary FF browser windows using the "Firefox" option versus the "Open new window" option when I right click the pinned FF taskbar icon, but it works the way I want it to work which is put the cursor inside the search box middle of the page. Maybe it's "functioning as designed", I don't know. Maybe the FF developer braintrust can figure out why the 2 methods of opening subsequent FF windows produce a different functionality for the placement and input capability of the cursor? I'm just posting this up so that if anyone else is getting frustrated with the "lost cursor in the search box" problem, maybe try starting extra FF windows using the "Firefox" option if you start them by right clicking a pinned FF taskbar icon, like I do. Just thought I'd post it up, as it all struck me as odd, but the work around is simple. :)

First and most important I want to thank FredMcD and cor-el. Your input got me "going" again.

E-mail is the more important issue at this point. I use Gmail and have for years, and right now I have to go through their awkward login procedure every time I start Firefox. In Safari, which I want to leave behind, I just click on mail and I'm in. Can I setup this situation in Firefox?

My history only shows "Today", "Yesterday", "Last 7 days". I don't want to show a ton of history, but I would like to show 14 days. In some of the help articles I see far more history than that. Is there any way I can push history to 14 days?

Help would be greatly appreciated as I'm 78 and weak on technology, chubbles

Recently there was a change how Firefox behaves regarding the recent downloads pop-up menu.

Up until 98.0 if I downloaded an item, the "Download" icon showed that there is a new downloaded item (it became "active", recolored to blue, so just like a nofiication icon), and If I clicked on the "Download" icon (down arrow), than it showed (a small pop-up below the download icon) the 3 recent items that were downloaded.

In 98.0 this was changed.

Now if I download an item, the recent downloaded pop-up list becomes active, and shows the recent items. So if I control the page with keyboard, I have to move back to the page, because now the keyboard input is controlling that small pop-up recent downloads.

If I download an item, just recolor/notify the download icon to blue showing that there is a new item, DON'T show me the recent downloads, and DON'T make that pop-up active, because I use mostly keyboard, and it is hard to control the page with keyboard presses, when that pop-up comes up.

I want the recent download pop-up functionality as it was before 98.0.

How do I change this behavior back? How do I turn off to NOT open the recent downloads pop-up automatically after each download?

Please, anyone know a workaround that I can use to achieve this action?

Since version 98 this new entry has appeared right at the top of the downloads right click context menu.

It's really annoying, 1) because it is right at the top - so it's always the first thing you're accidentally likely to select 2) because it exists at all. There is already a way to select to always open file certain types. There's no need to have this thrust in peoples' faces every time they right click a downloaded item.

Please provide a (simple) way to remove it and/or at least put it lower down the right click context menu. Thank you.

Fist I would like to participate with Firefox more - I want to become more a part of the community - and add in my consultant expertise Next I would like to suggest several things, but today just one - your Updates

I cannot take this anymore. Every couple weeks there is some update, and it is unacceptable - it disrupts my life. I do not want to restart my computer, I have dozens of documents and files open that I am working on, and this interferes with my daily routines, and as a top activist in your circle u are not yet aware of... its KIND OF important!

Straight up a vast majority of these updates should be released in 'packs' around the start of the month, and then I will not mind, but every couple weeks and the icon to download pops up continuously and then restarts my computer by force - that is MSN bully actions - like come on team... it is annoying as hell!

It's gotta change as it is even more annoying than bookmarks being saved on my home page in the top spots - blank is better than something that is not needed there - the Firefox browser home is a VERY important organizational tool for your members AND is your 'face' to the world that u are not using even at par to help your success.

As for other suggestions I would like to help in the future. Especially when it comes to you guys asking for with emails to get operational capital - I want to help - so I have sent letters in response and received no answers! If the Capitalist Elite will collapse the economy to repurchase everything back at half price, during that time many entities that receive public funding will no longer survive, as the public will be in bread lines.

The time to evolve your community has arrived... contact me for the next levels...

In other 'apps' on windows 10 the tooltip is above the pointer or below it. In Firefox it is directly under the mouse. So usually any tooltip popup in firefox is unreadable, mostly. One can infer the content sometimes.

How do i change that? Or what is the problem?

I'll try and include a screenshot. Hmm, the screenshot didn't include the mouse. I think i can do a video with OBS and then a screenshot of that.

Interesting, somehow in the screenshot from the obs video it shows 2 mouse pointers. One is very small and the tooltip is just below that, but the other is larger (the one I see) and it covers the tooltip. I'm using the standard windows mouse settings for larger mouse pointers. I just tried using the 'old' mouse settings to select a larger mouse and it behaves the same way. If I select size: 1 in the new size settings, and the old settings i have 'windows system' mouse, then the tooltip is under the pointer but the size is too small for the pointer. I then changed to another mouse setting in the old selector "inverted extra large" and you can see the tooltip because of the 'inverted' nature of the pointer, but the tooltip is still partially covered by the pointer.

Ideally the choice would be to put the tooltip above the mouse pointer rather than below. When you increase the size of the mouse pointer it only increases down, not up. The point of the pointer is always at the top.

I'm going to try one more thing, increasing the size in the new settings after having selected "inverted", but i recall that it changes to the new pointer style. Ah, there is an inverted setting in the new options as well, and if i select that instead of the gray color i was using then one can read the tooltip through the mouse.

So, then my question becomes "can I put the tooltip above the mouse pointer?" Because it is still covered by the mouse pointer as is. I don't see anything in 'about:config', so far.

Thank you.

I'm interested in learning more about Firefox's about:config configuration settings. I'm especially interested in why the developers have added the ability to create your own preferences for Firefox. It seems to be kind of similar to the Microsoft Windows registry, like how you can add your own custom values and suddenly windows behaves differently. But whenever I have configured the registry in windows, I have always had to follow tutorials, and I have always wondered how people were able to discover those registry settings. Did they have to have knowledge of the internals of the windows operating source code? Did they hack windows and discover that altering a certain registry setting, or adding a certain registry value, would cause the behavior to change? How did they come to understand such things? I recently edited the registry to change the right click menu in windows 11 back to the old windows 10 right click menu. I had to add a really long value into the registry, and it fixed it just like what I was used to in windows 10. But I have no idea how the person that wrote the tutorial knew to add that exact value.

So, I'm wondering if the settings are hidden, and that's why you have to create them on your own? Or if by creating your own preference, one is programming the browser on some level... If so, what's the extent of programming that can be done by altering about:config and creating your own preferences? I have decent programming knowledge of javascript, C/C++, and python and all, but I don't understand something as complex as a browser, and why would you allow the user to create their own preferences, but I would like to. To clarify, I see there are preferences in about:config which are visible and can easily be configured, but I do not understand why there is a feature to add a setting. Is it just for developers of the browser? Is there ever a situation where a normal user like me might need to add their own preference? Can you recommend any manuals, documents, or books that I could read about it? Do you think it's something where I would just have to start reading the source code to eventually understand it?

One last question: is it possible to disable certain javascript features using the about:config? Could I disable MutationObserver, for example? Or make it be undefined whenever a new tab is opened? Could I make it so that assigning to window.location has no effect? I'm interested to know these things and what is possible. Sorry for the long winded message, I doubt anyone will read it, but thank you if you read it, and thank you even more if you have answers. I have found the source code for firefox, but it seems to be a daunting task to just read the raw source code to get the answers I want.
