Hi,

I am using Firefox for Linux, and whenever my yubikey is plugged in, firefox will start bothering me for a pkcs#11 password. It always happens on start-up but it gets relentlessly annoying if I happen to be on a site which potentially utilizes certificate auth, which I do not use this yubikey for.

I do however use it for 2fa, which does work perfectly fine.

How do I permanently stop whatever Firefox process keeps bothering me about this PKCS#11 password for functionality that I never use?

Firefox 129.0.2 (64-bit) Mozilla Firefox Snap for Ubuntu canonical-002 - 1.0

Running on kubuntu Linux 24.04, kernel version 6.8.0-41-generic (64-bit) KDE Plasma Version 5.27.11 Qt Version 5.15.13

I've posted a description of my problem on the kubuntu forums: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/newbie-support/help-the-new-guy/681835-firefox-eating-up-a-lot-of-cpu

Here is a synopsis of my posts on that thread to distill the most noteworthy symptoms:

I have snap Firefox installed.

$ snap list Name Version Rev Tracking Publisher Notes bare 1.0 5 latest/stable canonical✓ base core22 20240731 1564 latest/stable canonical✓ base firefox 129.0.2-1 4793 latest/stable mozilla✓ - firmware-updater 0+git.5007558 127 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - gnome-42-2204 0+git.510a601 176 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - gtk-common-themes 0.1-81-g442e511 1535 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - snapd 2.63 21759 latest/stable canonical✓ snapd thunderbird 128.1.0esr-1 507 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - $

If I start firefox from the shell command line, it runs fine. It runs the shell script in /usr/bin/firefox, which ultimately executes /snap/bin/firefox. Clearly that shell script is doing some configuration that I don't understand.

If I hit Alt-space I see the menu in the referenced screen grab (see attached).

If I select the first entry, to run firefox from the command line, it has the same effect as starting /usr/bin/firefox from a bash shell; it works fine. However, if I select the third entry, firefox does not play any video; I've mostly tested with YouTube videos that have actual video and audio.

I'm not sure what gets executed when I select the third option from the Alt-space menu. It appears from doing a "ps -ef" that it's the same /snap/firefox/... executable. But I'm wondering why is this entry in the Alt-space menu and how does it get initialized or 'configured' to run.

Additionally, if I do start firefox from the entry with the firefox browser icon, and it fails to play video, I must then uninstall firefox using snap and then reinstall in order to get video playback to work. That is, after a failed start, simply exiting firefox and restarting it from the shell command line will not work; firefox will not play video correctly at all.

I also noticed that on my PC desktop, "snap list" lists firefox as "firefox 129.0.2-1 4793 latest/stable mozilla✓ -"

But on my old Lenova laptop running the same kubuntu version, "snap list" lists firefox as "firefox 129.0.2-1 4757 latest/stable mozilla✓ -"

I'm up to date on both systems via "sudo apt update"' and "sudo apt upgrade"

Even more frustrating, today, for the first time, despite starting firefox from the command line, video still didn't play. I had to uninstall firefox and reinstall it.

I've enabled DOM storage and cookies but no difference. I've cleared cookies and no help. I'm running Firefox 115.0.2 and Linux Mint.

Is part of the problem that I hate Microsoft and they know it?

I have the following settings in Settings/Preferences>General:

Files and Applications

Downloads Save all files in the following folder: Downloads Ticked Ask every time where to save a file

Applications Portable Document Format (PDF): Open in Firefox How should Firefox deal with other files? Ticked Ask whether to open or save files

On specific websites when I click on a pdf link, Firefox opens and automatically saves the file to Downloads folder without asking whether to save and where to save despite the above settings. As far as I remember, on other websites when clicking a pdf link Firefox only opens the corresponding file and doesn't save.

I found this with a internet search https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/stop-saving-pdfs-to-downloads-when-viewing-in-firefox/td-p/10225.

How can it be disabled that Firefox automatically saves PDFs?

2FA login on sites works with Chromium but NOT WITH Firefox (Linux)

Present setup:

Does NOT work firefox 102.7.0esr on debian 11.6 bullseye 5.10.162-1 (x86-64) firefox 110.0 on Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS 5.15.0-58 (x86-64)

Works chromium 109.0.5414.119 on debian 11.6 bullseye 5.10.162-1 (x86-64)

I am able to register and authenticate with security devices Yubikey NEO (without FIDO2) and Yubikey 5 NFC (FIDO2 compliant) on several sites (eg. pypi, google..) using Chrome or Chromium but now not with Firefox at all. It has not worked for at least the last few updates. Changing settings in about:config or plugging/unplugging keys, stopping every Firefox plugin etc. don't help. Neither does a fresh Firefox install without any super-security-settings.

Testing sites like Yubico's own or Okta's works fine using Chromium but not Firefox.

From what I can see this is not especially related to FIDO2 (Webauthn). pypi seems to use U2F which should work just fine with Firefox since way back.

I haven't tested Firefox for Windows but Chrome browser for Windows 10 works fine (which I tested first when Firefox didn't cut the mustard), I therefore expect it to work also on Chrome browser for Linux. Just to check if this was related to a debian bullseye package, I tested it on Ubuntu MATE too, which didn't do the trick. Haven't done any more testing than that on MATE.

This seems like a strictly firefox problem. -What to do?

In the about:profiles page I can see that the Root Directory for my current profile is: /home/username/.mozilla/firefox/no9r1iq5.default-release-1681391696978 When I click the Open Directory button it does nothing. When I manually navigate to /home/username/.mozilla/firefox I can see that there is no folder there called no9r1iq5.default-release-1681391696978

The Local Directory is show as: /home/username/.var/app/org.mozilla.firefox/cache/mozilla/firefox/no9r1iq5.default-release-1681391696978 This exits and opens with the Open Directory button.

If I search for no9r1iq5.default-release-1681391696978 in the file manager, I see that there are two folders with this name, on at the Local Directory path shown above and the other at: /home/username/.var/app/org.mozilla.firefox/.mozilla/firefox My assumption is that this is actually the Local Folder (it contains files with today's date)

My question is, why does about:profiles show the wrong path for the Local Directory or why is the actual Local Directory in the wrong place (it appears that the path shown in about:profiles is the normal default location)?

I tried creating a new profile and it was created in exactly the same way: the Local directory path is: /home/username/.var/app/org.mozilla.firefox/.mozilla/firefox but about:profiles says it is: /home/username/.mozilla/firefox

I would rather have my profile in the normal default location but I want to ensure that I don't leave pointers to the wrong location that could cause problems.

I am running Firefox 121.0 (64-bit) from flathub on Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm).

Any help appreciated.

I'm trying to use Microsoft Teams in Firefox because the native app for Linux is abandoned and crashes, and at first sight the app is blocking Firefox on purpose. Buttons to make calls are disabled, stating that audio and video are not supported in my browser, but everything works normally if join to existing calls using e.g. links.

Is it possible to trick Teams to think I'm using Chrome? I found the "User-Agent Switcher and Manager" add-on, but I can't figure out how to possibly use it.

Hello,

We are adding accessibility features to the Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 5 Linux distribution based on Debian 12, and we would like to use the reading mode included in Firefox to enable smoother voice reading for visually impaired people.

Currently we are going to use the Svox Pico and eSpeak speech synthesis at the same time because in SVox Pico we do not have all the voices we need for our possible users, particularly Portuguese.

We have found how to make the synthesis used by Firefox's reading mode be SVox Pico by default instead of eSpeak, however this requires a modification in the /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf file.

To do this, simply put the default pico synthesis in this file:

DefaultModule pico

But this causes problems with other software that we intend to use.

We found how to make all the voices of a speech synthesis appear in the Firefox playback menu by going to about:config and doing a search for the word "narrate":

Option narrate

On the other hand, we cannot find how to modify the "narrate.voice" option to tell it to default to pico speech synthesis instead of eSpeak synthesis which is the first synthesis loaded by speech-dispatcher, because we must keep eSpeak as the first synthesis loaded and do not put a default synthesis in speechd.conf to maintain compatibility with software that we wish to use.

Do you have any tips or a manual that explains the possible options for the "narrate.voice" option?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there! I am a long time Chrome user and decided to try Mozilla Firefox. I loved it and after a bit of tweaking, I run into a problem I can't deal with myself. In Chrome I loved auto fill options every time I needed the option for my home address, email address or credit card. In Firefox I just can't do it. The option is only available for Canada or SUA. Is there any way I can make it work? Of course, I looked for some add-ons and actually found several, but given the fact that auto-fill in my case deals with personal and sensitive data, I need a safer method. Is there any? Thank you!

I have the HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY and FTP_PROXY (and their lowercase counterparts) exported and then the firefox binary is started from the shell script. The settings in firefox say it will 'Use system proxy settings'. Nevertheless I do not see the proxy being used as I can not access the web pages that need the proxy. The 'about:config' also does not show that firefox picked up any proxy related information from the shell environment.

I know the proxy address is correct because if I use brave browser instead of firefox (same shell script that launches brave) I can reach the web pages behind the proxy as expected.

Twice in the past 2-3 weeks I have had to restart the computer, Linux Mint 21.2 Firefox 124(when updated in the past couple of days), due to the mouse freezing up and not being able to move the mouse on the screen. That's not the current problem, but it might help direct things to the final solution.

After the most recent reboot last night now I'm having a rather problem. The up/down arrow keys are no longer scroll me up and down a webpage like they always have in the past. Instead of doing smooth scrolling like they always use to, now they are scrolling me up and down the links on a web page. For example, if I were to be on youtube it would first want to scroll me down the left side links before taking me through each and every video link, when the page goes to load in more videos than it wants to go back and scroll me down the left side links again. It acts like it is taking me through the html code, line by line, instead of scrolling me smoothly down the webpage. The only way I can scroll smoothly down the webpage is to use the mouse on the scrollbar on the right side. It does this both in normal mode and in Troubleshooting Mode.

I have checked and beret scrolling is false as well as beret_shortcut. Use autoscrolling, use smooth scrolling, show scrollbars and always underline links are all clicked on. Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages is unclicked. I have tried different changes between clicking on and unclicking those options with no change being noticed.

How can I get this back to the way it used to run?

Firefox package was installed on Ubuntu through 'APT', using the Mozilla Team repository (https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mozillateam/ppa/ubuntu/). It caught my attention that an excessive amount of Firefox related 'DENIED' AppArmor log messages is generated during the browser activity.

According to messages, Firefox is occasionally denied read access to '/sys/devices/' area and read/write access to 'oom_score_adj' target in '/proc/'. Could somebody clarify why would that access be required for regular browser operations? I'm a bit puzzled as I haven't noticed anything similar with the older Ubuntu and Firefox versions. A complete suppression of those messages is also an option as long as there's no negative impact on application's performance.

I already posted this question to Ubuntu forum but seems like nobody there could provide an explanation. I'd appreciate any input or hint.

Following is the sample of referred log messages:

I have several machines on my local network. I work on machine A, and run applications remotely using ssh -X on the other machines. Today I discovered that when I start Firefox on newly-upgraded machine B, it's actually starting the older version that's on machine A. This seems obviously wrong, and is certainly not what I want to happen. I want to run the newer Firefox that's on B, and have it display on A.

Longer details: A runs OpenSUSE Leap 15.0. B runs Leap 15.4. I start an xterm on B with the command " "ssh -X -l me B", and programs other than Firefox I run from that xterm display on A's monitors, as expected. However, when I try to run Firefox (by typing "firefox &" on the command line, what actually runs is the older version of Firefox that is on A, just as if I'd started it with the same command on one of A's terminals.

Is this a known behavior, and if so, is there a way to work around it? Or am I just doing something really stupid?

Any of the cursors I installed will default to DMZ-White, but Firefox is using those cursors that came installed with Ubuntu. I tried defining the default cursor in /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme but did nothing as well. Also I tried with the cursor in /usr/share/icons and in /home/name/.icons and firefox cannot get in any of those.

I don't know if it's something wrong with my cursors or it's some inner thing with Firefox, any one has a guess? Incompatibility or something missing from the cursor?

Hi there,

On Firefox, I'm experiencing "momentum" scrolling where, when I scroll using the trackpad, after I lift my fingers off, it keeps scrolling for a bit.

This is not the same thing as smooth scrolling. Disabling smooth scrolling does not disable this behaviour, and I use smooth scrolling on plenty of programs without it experiencing this "sliding" "momentum" on any of them except Firefox. I've also used Firefox before with trackpads without experiencing this.

How can I disable this?

I have run into an annoyance where I am trying to click on a link in my email to open a new page. Clicking on the link makes a bar show up telling me that Firefox has prevented a popup from being opened (see attached image). I am given the option of managing my preferences / Firefox settings, where I can either go through multiple steps to permanently allow all pop-ups from that website until I restore my original settings, or uncheck a box to permanently allow all pop-ups from all sites until I check that box again. This is annoying because I have no interest in either allowing or disallowing all pop-ups from all websites, or all pop-ups from this specific website, every time I want to open a single pop-up from a specific site. I would rather that the warning bar which tells me that Firefox has blocked a pop-up also display a button allowing me to allow ONLY THIS SPECIFIC POP-UP IN THIS SPECIFIC CASE.

Is this a setting that exists in Firefox? Alternatively, is there a version of Firefox which does have a setting which would allow this? Or is this simply not a functionality that exists for this browser?
