I sometimes receive notification that Fx can't update automatically and I need to download the update. Twice now, the update has deleted my profile on drive D, and replacing it with a new one on the default C: drive. Settings, options, addons all GONE! I finally had to restore my entire system from a backup. What's going on and how can I prevent it happening again?

Firefox 76.0 Switching all add-ons to manual update does not work, nor with the older versions, every time Firefox is started, the add-ons are updated every time and that annoys.

Per Firefox guidance there is an option to toggle on an option that would not would not prompt to update. The option box though is not an option in preferences (See below).

Did this option once exist, but it is no longer available and no one bothered to up date the trouble shoot guide?

If so, why does it not still exist?

Can it be brought back?

If not, is there some backdoor way to shut it off?

Firefox occasionally checks to see if any updates are available for itself and for your search engines. To disable these checks:

   Click the menu button Fx57Menu and select Preferences.
   In the General panel, scroll down to the Firefox Updates section.
   Check Never check for updates (not recommended) and uncheck Automatically update search engines.
   Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

Mac OS X High Sierra 10.13.6

Here's the routine with FF on this machine: If FF 68.0.2 is running, after a while I will try to open a new tab and be told "Sorry we need to do one small thing to keep going, FF has been updated in the background, Restart FF" I do so. It opens up a new, clean profile in a new window (About FF now says 68.0.1 in this version of FF, and it downloads 68.0.2 and prompts to Restart FF (again)). At which point it runs "a new helper tool" and re-updates FF to 68.0.2. I then have to mess with about:profiles to go back to my profile. Things then run routinely for a few hours or a day, before the whole routine starts over again.

Alternately, if FF 68.0.2 is not running, if I open it (after opening and closing it several times without issue), I will get a message that "You've launched an older version of FF, Create New Profile or Quit". Create New Profile leads me through the routine above.

Versions of the above routine have happened not just between 68.0.2 and 68.0.1, but also between earlier version updates. That is, this has been going on for months. It does seem in the last couple of weeks that the interval of time has shortened and I'm having to do this routine everyday or even multiple times a day. I have no problems like this with FF on any other machine.

I've tried:

Trashing FF and re-dl'ing from Mozilla. No dice. Trashing FF, trashing Library/Cache/Mozilla and Firefox folders. No dice. Trashing FF, trashing Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles (and re-signing in to retrieve my existing bookmarks etc and re-setting up View and other Preferences). No dice.

If anyone has any ideas, I'll be grateful, thanks in advance.

Using 68.0.2 in Debian 9.4 Stretch. Originally FF 68.0.2 was installed in my Downloads directory but I moved it to /opt and is still working fine. Since the release of version 69 it has been pestering me asking for an update, even that the automatic update option is checked on. Downloaded 69.0 and again moved to it to /opt. Renamed the 68.0.2 from firefox to firefox 68 and tried to run 69 but it will not respond. Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks.

Браузер обновился сам, без предупреждения, проигнорировав мои настройки, и не позволяет продолжить работу без перезапуска. О найденном обновлении он сообщил относительно давно. Я его игнорировал, кажется, больше недели, потому что не хотел перезагружать несколько сотен вкладок. Компьютер всё это время был включен, а браузер оставался открыт. Вопроса, собственно, три: 1. Это баг или фича? 2. Если это фича, то как её отключить, чтобы такое не повторилось в будущем? 3. Можно ли что-то сделать сейчас, чтобы продолжить работу, не перезапуская браузер?

ОС - Linux mint. Firefox установлен НЕ из репозитория, а как отдельный deb пакет, скачанный с официального сайта Мозиллы. Версия 68.0.2 (64-битный).

ubuntu 16.04, firefox 68.0.1. New instance started after "updated in background" restart just sits there. Add-ons are not started, tabs are not restored as promised. Typing in URL bar and hitting enter does nothing. No response to attempt to open a bookmark. Typing "about:support", no response. I tried removing and re-installing firefox with "sudo apt", no help. Starting firefox without addons, no help. The "about:firefox" display shows no change in version number. A reboot is the only thing that cures this. It has now happened 8 times (8/2, 8/5, 8/9. 8/16 and 4 times earlier). I have about-buildconfig, about-firefox and about-support from 8/2 and 8/5 if they would be helpful.

I am running version 65 as of Feb-3-2019 on my Mac high sierra and for some reason Firefox updated to this version without my consent. I have "check for updates but let me choose when to install them" selected.

Why does this update occur?

I run debian 9.8, and rather than using the distro version of firefox, I run the mozilla version. This works just fine, but when firefox detects that it needs updating, the only way I know to do it is to log into Xwindows using the root account and do it from there. I don't want a *user* account to own the browser, but I can't seem to find a way to update without Xwindows. There are some old links about using .MAR files, but the most recent one is a couple of years old, and due to appearances, i suspect - although i didn't confirm it by following the links - that only older versions, not the current one, can be loaded that way. Enough people have looked at this that it would appear worth putting in a flat warning that this cannot be done, so that people don't waste their time looking for something that doesn't exist. Help!

In Firefox 65 when I added an exception to the popup blocker then the popup windows were allowed to popup coming from that site, even if the current website in my browser was different: this is typically how bookmark managers work, I click on the add-on icon to bookmark the current website.

In Firefox 66 this behavior has changed, even if the website (where the popup window is coming from) is added to the exception list, the popup window will be blocked. To make it work you also have to add the current webpage in the browser to the exception list, which means you have to turn off completely the popup blocker.

When I turned on my computer - firefox went into refresh. I didn't press anything - refresh just started all by itself. When it finished my desktop was gone. All my bookmarks, passwords, history - GONE. Like I'd downloaded a brand new copy of FF and had never used it before. Now how the hell do I get it all back??

Long time user (15-20 yrs?), I have been avoiding the "next" upgrade for several years for various reasons (hate change, fave add-ons go away, hate change, not broke-don't fix, hate change...). But I am now running into a few websites that won't permit this browser, so it may be time to move on. With heavy adblocking and tracker-blocking and my benign web browsing habits, I've not been concerned about security (never had a virus in 20 years - knock wood). It's just full functionality and slowness at this point. At this point, I see even my Classic Theme Restorer is no longer available, so I'll just have to bite the bullet on aesthetics and deal with a modern browser. However, a couple of things are unclear:

1. does 20 years of bookmark history (and remembered history) affect memory footprint. I only refer to existing bookmarks occasionally these days and may consider a full purge. Partial purge would probably be too time-consuming. Maybe even a full profile purge might be worthwhile for a true clean slate. Maybe FF has come a long way and old extensions and settings won't be necessary. I also have several about: settings that I may (or may not?) miss.

2. Are automatic updates unavoidable in newer versions? I read about "manual" but it sounded temporary.

3. The permissions on many potential add-ons I've looked at are quite unnerving... e.g many of them require full access to ALL my data (usernames and passwords!!!) and I know the function has no need for such. Who has time to investigate these fully for safety? Is there any anti-malware vetting required for add-ons to be available?

4. I know newer is generally faster, but FF has a history of growing and slowing down after upgrades. My hardware isn't getting any newer (although its more than ample for my current needs), but software tends to be developed on latest and greatest hardware. How does latest FF compare to circa V41 in memory usage?

In any case, I thought I would give the latest vesion a whirl on my old Vista laptop (which is currently at V43) and check it out before plunging in on my W7 work PC or home PC. Any answers or insight into such a big jump are much appreciated.

Hello, so I was doing something and then it started lagging. I closed Firefox and when I pressed it again it wouldn't start. It updated then it stopped working. I restarted my PC, clicked many times on Firefox logo and it wouldn't start. I got an error message in the top left corner that appeared for a milisecond. I took a video of it with my phone so I could read what was wrote there. It said "XML analysis error:entity undefined. Location:chrome://browser/content/browse Line number 53, column 1. (Sorry if it ain't the exact words, im translating because my Firefox is in french). There was also <windows id-"main-window"> under it. Don't tell me to open Firefox in safe mode, because that doesn't work either. When I hold shift, nothing happens. It doesn't ask me to go to safe mode. How do I fix this? Thanks

Last week FireFox auto upgraded. Since then the browser will not come up. Only this message does:

XML Parsing Error: undefined entity Location: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul Line Number 53, Column 1:<window id="main-window" ^ </p>

You need to know as I am confident I am not alone in need for a resolution.

Hi. I've been a loyal user to Mozilla Firefox for many years now. My concern is whenever I updated the browser from the past, It deletes my settings and extensions. That's whats keeping me from updating it for quite sometime now. So Im simply afraid to do it. For example. Part of my research entails an extension that downloads and converts from a video site. After an update this is removed. I have to re-install everytime. I so got tired of this. Its so annoying everytime it asks for updating, I have to opt out. Is there some way I can update this without messing up my settings? Has Mozilla already worked out a version without messing with my settings? Thank you for the help.

I love Firefox but updates are becoming annoying to the point of me not wanting to use it anymore.

It's bad enough there are so many updates, and it's bad enough that we have to mess about with CSS to customize Firefox, but having to redo the hard-gained custom CSS regularly leaves me speechless.

The CSS may be obvious to you folks, but for anyone not knowing the browser structure it's a time-consuming nightmare.

Rather than coming up with fancy new features a lot of people may not need anyway, please first make it more usable by adding options for features such as the tabs position and adjust the CSS behind the scenes.

Every time an update is published, a real risk exists an add-on won't work any more. Multirow Bookmarks is an example. In Firefux rel 64, the "never update" CHOICE for users is GONE. Mozilla just a little self-righteous there, maybe? I've used Firefox exclusively since release of Windows 3.1 and bragged on them often, but this is deplorable. How do I remove the constant pestering to update?

When I try download and install mozilla firefox it gives a prompt "This version of Firefox requires Microsoft Windows 7 x64 or newer". But the fact is that I'm installing it on a Win 7 64-bit environment and the firefox installer file is also 64-bit. I have verified the minimum system requirements for firefox installation and it meets the criteria. But still it doesn't allow me to install and gives the said prompt.

Tried various install files and no luck. When I try download it is the stub installer file that is available for latest versions. Refer the screenshot of the error.
