Running Firefox 102.11.0esr on Debian 11 desktop

Firefox is very, very slow in responding to the cursor which doesn't show up as an arrow initially (as it normally would) - so if I point at Reply (for example), normally the cursor would be an arrow, the Reply box would turn yellow and I would click which would activate the command. At the moment there is no arrow, the Reply box stays grey and nothing happens if I click the mouse button. Eventually though after about two minutes the action is done. This is happening with any command in Firefox, e.g. trying to delete text in a draft message or trying to open an email in my inbox etc. etc. - all of it is the same as above and takes about two minutes to happen.

I have been using Firefox as my browser for years. I like its privacy features.

Problem. Often, when I click on a URL to a secure site, as the page is loading, Firefox freezes. That tab & any other tabs that are open are frozen. If I click on them, nothing happens. Even after waiting for 2 minutes, the browser does not correct itself, or come back. I have to use Cntrl Alt Del to “close” Firefox. Eventually, the “Restart Firefox” dialog box appears. I have to wait for Firefox to stop running before the restart takes effect, & Firefox comes back. This happens with 3 or 4 secure sites that I visit, including Discover.com. Firefox also occasionally freezes while I am on a secure site, when I go from one page to another.

Is this a fault of the Firefox browser? Is there something I can or should do when I click on a secure link? Any suggestions would be appreciated. H. Meier.

I posted a question on the Firefox support page, and a support volunteer responded but his posting was not helpful and so I tried to post a reply. However, I tried several times over a period of many hours, and was not successful because I kept getting a message that said "Oh, no! It looks like an unexpected error occurred. We've already notified the site administrators. Please try again now, or in a few minutes." Some of the times that this occurred were at approximately 3:30 AM, 10:35 AM, 11:01 AM and 11:10 AM (Central Standard Time). I also tried using a different browser and still got the same message.

What can be done to correct this problem?

I have a 1 Gbps line from Comcast. I have a new HP desktop PC, 32 GB Ram. Speed tests from several test sites confirm good line speed. When I sign in to my email provider using Firefox, the circle on the screen goes round and round for up to 20 seconds. Not so with MS Edge. When I select an image to view using Firefox, I can watch the screen being painted. Not so with MS Edge. I have had slow responses from several other websites. Comcast has come out to my house twice to verify line speed. No problems found. Firefox appears to be the bottleneck at this point. Please help.

It happens whenever I try to google something. Google opens, I type whatever I search, the suggestions appear, but hovering on them doesn't turn the cursor into a pointer. The moment I click them, or press enter after typing, Firefox starts freezing. It also happens when I reload some other pages, for what I've seen till now. Looking into Task Manager, its memory usage goes up and up, and anything else that is connected gets cut off (running videos on YT stop, downloads fail, etc.). Tried on Chrome and there is no such issue.

I didn't install any new extension, nor application in the PC itself, or anything else. I don't think there was even a Windows update (using Windows 11). It simply started doing so from one day to the next, yesterday. I waited to see if it would go back to normal today, going away just like it came, but of course no. Restarting the PC doesn't fix it, troubleshooting mode does nothing, I tried setting accessibility.force_disabled to 1, but still nothing, changed Firefox profile, again nothing.

Any suggestions before trying to uninstall and reinstall (which would be very bothersome due to extensions and ongoing sessions, with no guarantee that it'd fix anything either)?

First off, heres my device info:

Device name: HP Spectre Convertible Model 15-ch011dx

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz 1.99 GHz

Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)

Device ID F3EDBCEE-137F-4854-B06C-912570DD1DB5

Product ID 00325-81213-26880-AAOEM

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Pen and touch Pen and touch support with 10 touch points

Every time i use firefox with even one tab open i end up with extremely high CPU usage-50% or more on average. It causes the exact type of issues that one would expect, and after spending a hours and hours over the last month looking for solutions and implementing anything promising, it hasnt improved. Ive done config edits, countless cache clears, memory snapshots via devtools, and many many other things that have been recommended to me and nothing has helped. running the browser in troubleshoot confirms the problem isnt related to extensions/add-ons or anything like that, because cpu numbers are identical to those seen normally. increasingly i am convinced that this has to be an issue on the mozilla side. reddit confirms i am not alone in struggling with this, not by a long shot.....pls help!

My firefox is presenting some malfunction on many features that are not working as they should. I tried to updated to it the last version to solve. It did not work. So I tried to restore it. which should work as I dont think its problems has to do with cookies or saved personal info. It did not work as well. So here some of the problems:

1- My firefox's home page is suppose to show my most visted sites. But it shows only empty/blank space. (image ) 2- I cant add any extension to my toolbar. They simply dont appear when I try to edit it. 3- I cant remove/edit any favorites (changes are not applied). 4- Some extension are just not working. for no reason. Betterttv for example. (Tried to reinstall, reset permission. ). they were working normally before. 5- autofill are not working. Does not show the options.

All this does not make any sense to me. As I've tried to solve restoring the firefox. Only cookies, passwords and personal info should have being kept and I dont think they are the cause of all this. I dont wanna to fully clean reinstall it as there are many logins, passwords and other info saved that I dont even remember. In additon it does not make any sense to me at all.

Firefox created a second Downloads folder/library when it opens a PDF to view in the browser.

file:///C:/Users/Name/Documents/Downloads/NightSkyNotesJan2022OrionDetail.pdf

I seem to remember finding lots of temp pdfs and other files in a temp folder under user/appdata/local or roaming and having to delete this files manually from time to time. Putting the files in an easy to find folder is a good step but my Downloads Library/folder had previously been moved to D:\Downloads via choose new target from the library properties. D drive is an internal HD, C drive is an SSD. Why didn't Firefox just use the existing Downloads library instead of creating a new one on the C drive?

Ideally, if you are viewing a pdf in a Firefox tab it would delete the file if you did not download it so it does not clog up your drives. If I know i want to keep a pdf I would save to my chosen folder and view in Acrobat instead of reading in a browser tab.

I agree with a previous post i saw requesting an option for the user to specify a temp file folder on another drive when viewing pdfs to preserve some life on the SSD boot drive.

Windows 10, Firefox 101.0.1

I have some .htm files which are stored in the root / directory and I would like to know how to access them in Firefox, running on Xubuntu 22.04 LTS

Interestingly enough, I found a solution here: Firefox Quantum: HTML files from internal (/usr) do not open which did solve my issue on my Virtual Machine which is running the same Xubuntu 22.04, however since performing a clean installation on a physical machine the same solution has not worked and I just get the follow error as shown in my image.

Despite removing the snap version of Firefox and performing the installation shown in this guide: How to install Firefox deb package, my physical machine just cannot access my local .htm files.

This has never been an issue for me on RHEL environments, and the file path syntax I am using is: file:///my_dir/my_dir2/index.htm

The directory permissions are: drwxr-xr-x root root

I can't run Firefox, and now I can't install it either.

When I tried to run Firefox, a "Close Firefox" error window would pop up. It says "Firefox is running, but not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window." My options are "Close Firefox" and "Cancel". It doesn't seem to make any difference which once I choose.

I have gotten this message lots of times over my years and years of using Firefox, but it was always easily resolved - either by waiting, forcing it to close in the Task Manager, or restarting the computer. In this case, none of those options have worked. The computer is less than a month old and is not a budget computer, and so I consider it to be unlikely to be part of the problem. I have been using Firefox without issue for the past month.

I have tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling multiple times, both with the settings unchanged, and with everything restored to the defaults. I still get the "Close Firefox" error message before installation is even complete.

I did a search on the forums and clicked through some of the help files including "Firefox won't close." One of the help files starts with things I've already tried, before moving on to more advanced options. The remaining suggestions all relate to the Profiles folder and deleting or altering files contained therein, but I went there and the folder is empty, even after I've turned on Hidden Files.

I don't know what else to try or where else to look. In the meantime, I have had to resort to using a different browser. No other programs on my computer are having this issue.

When I highlight text and move my cursor down to the bottom edge of the screen to scroll, it is super slow when going down. However if I do the same and scroll upwards by moving my mouse cursor to the top edge to scroll, it scrolls at a reasonable fast rate. The issue does not fix when I start in safe mode, or in private windows. The issue is exclusive to highlighting text and holding down to scroll. My scroll speed by clicking the scroll bar is normal, and so is using two fingers on my laptop (Asus Zenbook 14) to scroll down.

I don't encounter slow click and drag scrolling on google chrome.

Hello, While not on every occurrence of starting Firefox, too many times Firefox won't bring up its home page (Google) because two applications running in the background (Memeo Premium Backup and Trusteer Rapport) start to run at the same time and contribute at least 70% of the CPU load, with Firefox accounts for another 20%.

I imagined that Google is flooding Firefox with a lot of files that Memeo begins tabulating for transfer in anticipation of its external backup drive being eventually switched on.

So I decided to tell Memeo to specifically exclude two system folders which might be storing temporary files when Firefox is active.

C:\Users\**\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox C:\Users\**\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox

Doing this did not improve things, as Memeo and Trusteer occasionally turn on as Firefox is starting up.

Does anyone know of any other folders which could be potential locations for temporary data that Memeo may feel obligated to interact with.

Thanks

I was having issues playing videos. All I would get was a black screen, but I could hear the audio. Although some videos, like facebook shorts, played just fine. And I could view videos in other browsers. Tried several things I saw suggested on threads having the same issues, but ultimately I uninstalled firefox and then reinstalled it and it seemed to have fixed the issue. Hopefully this helps others having the same issue. I tried to suggest it on a few of those threads but they were locked.
