Updates – Last Updated: 17:04 EDT May 9, 2019
A less technical blog post about the outage is also available. If you enabled telemetry to get the initial fix, we’re deleting all data collected since May 4. (May 9, 17:04 EDT)
Mozilla CTO Eric Rescorla posted a blog on the technical details of what went wrong last weekend.
Updates – Last Updated: 19:28 EDT May 8 2019
We’ve released Firefox 66.0.5 for Desktop and Android, and Firefox ESR 60.6.3, which include the permanent fix for re-enabling add-ons that were disabled starting on May 3rd. The initial, temporary fix that was deployed May 4th through the Studies system is replaced by these updates, and we recommend updating as soon as possible. Users who enabled Studies to receive the temporary fix, and have updated to the permanent fix, can now disable Studies if they desire.
For users who cannot update to the latest version of Firefox or Firefox ESR, we plan to distribute an update that automatically applies the fix to versions 52 through 60. This fix will also be available as a user-installable extension. For anyone still experiencing issues in versions 61 through 65, we plan to distribute a fix through a user-installable extension. These extensions will not require users to enable Studies, and we’ll provide an update when they are available.
"Updates – Last Updated: 11:51 EDT May 8 2019 (From Mozilla Blog)
Firefox 66.0.5 has been released, and we recommend that people update to that version if they continue to experience problems with extensions being disabled. You’ll get an update notification within 24 hours, or you can initiate an update manually.
An update to ESR 60.6.3 is also available as of May 8th. We’re continuing to work on a fix for older versions of Firefox, and will update this post and on social media as we have more information."
A Firefox release has been pushed — version 66.0.4 on Desktop and Android, and version 60.6.2 for ESR. This release repairs the certificate chain to re-enable web extensions, themes, search engines, and language packs that had been disabled (Bug 1549061).
There are remaining issues that we are actively working to resolve, but we wanted to get this fix out before Monday to lessen the impact of disabled add-ons before the start of the week. More information about the remaining issues can be found by clicking on the links to the release notes above. (May 5, 16:25 EDT)
"Last Updated: 00:54 EDT May 5 2019
Updates:
Some users are reporting that they do not have the “hotfix-update-xpi-signing-intermediate-bug-1548973” study active in “about:studies”.
Rather than using work-arounds, which can lead to issues later on, we strongly recommend that you continue to wait. If it’s possible for you to receive the hotfix, you should get it by 6am EDT, 24 hours after it was first released.
For everyone else, we are working to ship a more permanent solution. (May 5, 00:54 EDT)
There are a number of work-arounds being discussed in the community. These are not recommended as they may conflict with fixes we are deploying. We’ll let you know when further updates are available that we recommend, and appreciate your patience. (May 4, 15:01 EDT)"

2019.04.12 Add 8G memory up to 16G mem, session restore again, firefox used 9G memory, 4G mem free, Firefox hanging on for another day. Kill process. Reduce memory back to 8G
2019.04.12 ---04.16 Give up session restore, leave the session restore tab for future . Open new tabs for surfing. At 04.16 ,a sudden firefox update, firefox opened up 3 windows to prompt update notification, Close the 2 windows, from the main window, the session restore tab gone, the history box not loaded(in the start tab), The firefox response slowly, firefox may have some problems. Kill process and open again, not getting better .
From that time point , session restore tabs never shows up. Close firefox by kill process, the size of Recovery.jsonlz4 increased accordingly,
Recovery.jsonlz4 size 57M Pages/Tabs:7600+ 2019/4/21 Try firefox version 52 , 57, 62,64 respectively to restore session , all failed. Try mozlz4-edit-master https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/scrounger.html
Scrounger have no response, Mozlz4 failed with error:

Why do more and more apps continue to disappear after each upgrade? There are so many apps that I love that are no longer available or not compatible? And often no replacements, this is what made Firefox so awesome was the apps. Now I have virtually nothing of the apps that I use and there are some where I have all kinds of files with information from them I cannot get to and I REALLY wan! For example 'scrapbook'. for example; I will have to go into thousands and thousands of files one at a time to get them. I hate the upgrades that you are doing more and more than I like them. I find myself either downgrading in frustration or using Chrome. You either have to stop upgrading so fast, make it so more apps are still compatible, or have a downgraded version before Quantum available. (easiest- offer a pre Quantum version.) If Firefox is for the people, than make it what the people want.

I would like to have a conversation with the developer who had the brilliant idea of applying LZ4 to the formerly plain text session backup files that were used since the beginning and worked perfectly fine.
What is the name of the person whose idea it was to add a “feature” to Firefox that made recovering lost sessions so much easier and saving 3 MB of my disk space for wasting over 100 minutes of my time figuring out how to handle LZ4 works and how to get the plain text that would normally be written directly to the disk after Firefox failed to recover the session after a crash and after file system readability problems?
And did the community explicitly ask for LZ4? Were there users of Mozilla Firefox that recommended LZ4? Who exactly had the idea of implementing LZ4?
Will places.sqlitelz4 (or “places.sqlite.lz4”) become the next victim of lz4?
Thanks in advance.

I used to use an add-on for TAB management in older Firefox versions, because the way Firefox handles tab-configuration is generally horrid. I had hoped that would be fixed in the latest version, but it is NOT. If the Firefox team prides itself on delivering a fast and user-friendly browser, why can't it allow users to configure tabs :
-where they are created (at the end, at the beginning, right next to the actual tab, on the right or left of the actual tab) -whether a new tab can be created with a double click on the titlebar, or right-clicking the titlebar or an existing tab -whether we want a list of followed tabs and/or history or not -to show only right-menu options for tab-management that I need / want OR to add menu options I'd like for tab-management
Right now my experience of how tabs react, is downright irritating and inconsistent (and if has guided me more than once to the about:config page in a desperate attempt to make tabs at the very least consistent) I love using Firefox (it all started with Netscape really) and I wouldn't use any other browser if possible, but, guys and girls... please fix the usability and flexibility of tabs... it would make firefox the right tool for EVERY browsing job Thanks

Since I reinstalled my Windows 10 laptop, Firefox 58 or higher won't launch. Firefox 57 or lower starts fine. But when I install FF 58+ and start the program, nothing happens. The cursor changes briefly and after a couple of seconds there's no more activity. The firefox.exe process shows no more activity.
What I tried: - Installed FF 58 or higher and started the program. No luck. - Started in safe mode, or profile manager. No luck, nothing happens. - I deleted all firefox files/registry keys (also from %appdata% and %localappdata%, as well as all reg keys below HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla. No luck. - With ccleaner I cleaned up all temp folders. No luck. - I temporary disabled a/v software (Windows defender and Palo Alto Traps). No luck. - I was running Windows 10 1607. I upgraded to 1709, but still no luck. - I analysed the process firefox.exe with process monitor from sysinternals. I don't see anything weird and after a couple of seconds, the process finishes with exiting a thread, and that's it. No more activity from this process, until I kill it manually. The process monitor log doesn't show any activities in accessing the user profile settings. - When I install FF 57 everything works fine. Then when I choose to upgrade, the upgrade finishes but FF won't start anymore. - I can't find any log files explaining what's going on. - Before I reinstalled my laptop, I used the same image (sccm) 1 year ago, and firefox was working fine then. - Finally I also looked at other toolings which could interfere, such as VLC media player. I removed those tools as well. No luck.
I'm at a loss here. Can somebody point me to the right direction? Perhaps version 58+ introduced something completely new which somehow causes issues with my installation? Any log files I'm missing, which might explain what's going on?
Thanks.
