Typing in the URL including the https:// prefix sends URL to search engine instead of the website! WHAT KIND OF GARBAGE IS THIS?????

Dear community,
in the settings I set Google as default search engine. Yet, every once in a while, when I search in the URL field, it searches via Bing, and when I check the settings, it - for whatever reason- has reset Bing as default search engine. I would prefer to get rid of it entirely, is there a may to completely "deinstall" that feature or something?
