Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing conections-- why does this happen suddenly in the middle of a session?
Using a Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8 64-bit, have made no changes or downloaded new programs yet in the middle of a session, as I went from one site to the next, this message appeared. I finally figured out how to get to "tools" then "network settings" and check "no proxy", but will this fix the problem? It happened before and I performed a system recovery, which also worked, but it was a huge hassle.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
You can check the connection settings.
- Tools > Options > Advanced > Network : Connection > Settings
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Options+window+-+Advanced+panel
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

I use Windows firewall and iObit's Advanced System Care Ultimate plus their malware program.
I had difficulty locating "tools". I finally went to the orange "Firefox" box at the top left of my screen and clicked Options>Network, Connection Settings where I saw options of "No Proxy", "Auto Detect Proxy Settings", "Use System Proxy Settings" (this one was checked), and "Manual Proxy Configuration".
The problem is, I have no idea what a proxy setting is and have never messed around with these. Is the correct one selected?
And, in probably a related issue, I was unable to even access the Firefox home page this morning, although the internet indication in the lower right corner of my screen was white (indicating an active internet connection). When I clicked on the Firefox logo on the desktop and on the tray, I got the message: Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe Class Not Registered
I went to my Program Files, clicked on Mozilla Firefox, and clicked on the Firefox logo. Lo and behold, the page opened and I was able to access websites.
I need to tell you that I am not very tech-oriented. I do try to keep my laptop current with updates and backups, but the technicalities of anything more really confuses me. If you have any advice about either issue, I would really, really appreciate it.
And, do I need a proxy? As I understand from what I have read, since I have only one computer (laptop) and I don't share an internet connection (except when I use my kindle to go online), I don't need one and perhaps I should check the "no proxy" option.

And, in another development with the second issue, I closed the Firefox windows then tried to click on the desktop and tray icons but kept receiving the Class Not Registered box. I had to go into the program files (x86)>Mozilla Firefox>firefox.exe to open the Firefox page. Why do the icons no longer work?

If you are not using a proxy (something that passes on requests from the browser and replies to the browser thru itself), then the best setting is "No Proxy". The default, "Use System Proxy Settings", does not work for everyone. Why it was changed to the default, I have no clue.
