Firefox keeps spontaniously adding new bookmarks

已張貼

Periodically Firefox will randomly bookmark the page I'm on without any prompting from me, and without telling me. I have no idea how often it does this, but every couple of weeks I'll scroll to the bottom of my bookmarks menu to discover anywhere from one to fifteen new bookmarks that I didn't put there. All will be pages I remember visiting within the time since I last looked, and some that I visit particularly often (like my homepage or my email page) will be bookmarked in duplicate as many as five times.

When I checked earlier today the bookmarks included (if I'm remembering correctly) Google (3 times), two or three different Wikipedia articles that I read earlier this week, my email inbox, 2 questions I'd answered on Yahoo! Answers within the last few days as well as my "My Activity" page on the same site, my email inbox (twice), my profile page on Sporepedia, and an article I'd recently read on some mythology blog that I neither follow nor recall the name of. I think there might have been one or two others, but I'm not certain. I've since removed all of these from the end of the list.

The first time this happened (that I'm aware of), there was a new separator after the last bookmark I'd actually put there and before the new ones (the new bookmarks are always added at the very end of the list, uncategorized), although I've since gotten rid of that separator and no more new separators have appeared.

Has anyone else had this issue? Do you know what might be causing it, or how to fix it?

This should only happen if you click the star at the right end side of the location bar. You may be clicking this button by accident instead of the button right next to it.

Are those bookmarks located in the Unsorted Bookmarks folder?

Oh... that's what that does. But no, I haven't clicked on that or the button next to it.

No, they're not in Unsorted Bookmarks. They're in Bookmarks Menu.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I've got MalwareBytes and scan regularly. It sometimes finds something, but deleting that something never fixes this particular problem

It is possible that you click the wrong item (Bookmark This Link) in the right-click context menu by accident when you try to click another entry.

All anti-virus and anti-malware scanners have a different set of detection lists. These are the list of malware/viruses that are detected during a scan.

A program like Hitman Pro can be used after a scan with a regular malware scanner, as a second opinion scanner.

Here is my story.
I was having some issues with Microsoft Word on my computer. I scanned for viruses and malware, but nothing was found.
I assumed that since nothing was found, the program must be broken. I posted information on a forum.
Someone recommended Hitman Pro, so I downloaded it and ran it. It found over 100 malware files that my other scanners had missed.
That fixed the issue.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

FirefoxSafeMode

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Alright, I spent the whole day in Safe Mode and no new bookmarks appeared, but due to the irregular intervals at which the bug occurs, I've no way of knowing if the problem is fixed or if it simply just didn't happen this time. I'm unsure how to proceed from here.

Do you have any extensions installed and enabled?

  • Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

Unfortunately, you will need to use the trial and error message to figure out which add-on is causing the issue.
I recommend trying to disable the DownloadHelper first. I looked up all of your add-ons in the Mozilla Add-on Site and they all had good ratings, except the DownloadHelper because I couldn't locate it on the site.

Please report back soon.

As I stated in my last post, I don't actually know whether the problem actually went away at all when I switched to safe mode, as the frequency at which new bookmarks appear is somewhat erratic, so its entirely possible that they just didn't appear during the time I was in safe mode

As I said before, I did run Safe Mode for an entire day. But the error doesn't happen every day, so I can't actually tell whether it went away or not.

Ok. Try disabling the DownloadHelper for the next week.

If the issue still occurs anytime during the week, please try the same process with another extension.

Wasn't Download Helper. Would appear to have been Twitter Disconnect that did it, so I'll be getting rid of that I suppose.

I wish I'd actually found out why it was making it do that, though.

Okay, nevermind it wasn't Twitter Disconnect, because its started doing it again. See what I mean about the erratic frequency?

ALSO: I share my bookmarks between two computers on the cloudy syncy thing. Might that have something to do with it?
