Bookmarks in folders have gone missing?

more options

Alright. So i've had this issue for a little while now. xD And its starting to get kind of annoying. I have most of my bookmarks sorted in folders and such for easy access when i need to look for a certain one.

For some reason or another, two weeks ago. They all poofed. o.O Like.. The folders are there, But they are empty. But when i open the bookmarks up using cntrl-B they are actually there, inside their folders. Unchanged.

Now, i don't like using the sidebar bookmark bar. So, i am curious.. how can i fix this? Also, Right around that time i downloaded and installed BoostSpeed 6. To help clean up a ton of junk off my computer. Though i think it is linked somehow to having issues with my bookmarks in general. @_@

SOLUTION:

The Problem:

Your Bookmarks are corrupted somewhere with a bookmark(s) that has no "location" (url) value, and any new bookmarks below this bad bookmark will not show up in the standard "Bookmarks" Menu, but they will still actually show up in the "Show All Bookmarks" window.

Fix:

(0) In "Show All Bookmarks", use the scroll bar to find all bookmarks where a "location" url value is obviously missing. For each folder you find one in, make sure you move all bookmarks above this bad bookmark, so that this bad bookmark is last (at the bottom) in that folder. Do it for all folders.

(1) Export your Bookmarks (save them) to somewhere on your hard drive. "Show All Bookmarks" --> "Imports and Backup" --> "Export Bookmarks to HTML"

(2) Now we'll delete the "places.sqlite" bookmarks store, and force Firefox to make a new "places.sqlite" that is not corrupted.

(3) In Firefox click "Help" --> "Troubleshooting Information" --> "Show Folder" Button (under "Application Basics" title, next to label "Profile Folder"). This will open up a new folder explorer window. Keep it open.

(4) Now close Firefox.

(5) In the opened new folder explorer menu window, delete the file "places.sqlite", and also delete all the files in the folder "bookmarkbackups".

(6) Now Open Firefox back up.

(7) Last, "Import" your bookmarks you saved in step (1) on your hard drive. "Show All Bookmarks" --> "Imports and Backup" --> "Import Bookmarks from HTML"

(8) Wait about 3 to 5 minutes for Firefox to "recreate" the structure of all the Bookmark Files and (especially) all the Bookmark Folders you may have created to organize your personal Bookmarks (it's a lot of files and folders for Firefox to re-create). It may seem like Firefox is not doing anything but put the cursor outside Firefox and you'll probably see the hour-glass or spinning image indicating work is being done. In about 5 minutes all Bookmarks should work.

Is the problem with the folders on the Bookmarks menu or on the Bookmarks toolbar?

Menu, I'd say. I'm very use to just going to the top, going to boomarks and such like that. I've reinstalled Firefox as well, and that didnt fix it. I am thinking maybe if I delete all bookmarks and use a back up that it might work.. But im not sure. D:

You can try to restore the bookmarks from an older JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups if the latest backup is corrupted as well.

Do you still see any folders or bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar?

Also make sure that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still positioned on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

I did go and restore them. Which got them working. However, with that it took away a good 100+ bookmarks i had. Q_Q And i do not think i can get them back at this point. I'm going to try and restore to a earlier day, and see if i can get them back. But, it did sorta fix itself. But still broke itself anyways since im missing a ton of bookmarks from both my backup JSON. guh. Which, both are/were corrupted. =/ Probably wont get em back. But i think this can be considered solved..

Since the bookmarks are now displaying in folders for me again. /nodnod

I know what you're talking about, I have the same problem. I don't have the fix but I do have the problem identified.

One of my folders has a bookmark that has no "location" (url) value in the "Show All Bookmarks". This one bad bookmark is causing all subsequent bookmarks below it in the same folder to not show up off of the regular "Bookmarks" toolbar way of looking/getting to your Bookmarks

If you can find this one bad Bookmark without a "location" (url) value, you can "copy" all bookmarks in that bookmark folder to a new folder, then delete the "bad" bookmark. Sorry I don't have an official solution, but this is something Mozilla Firefox has to fix b/c bad bookmarks without the "location" (url) value stored should not be happening in the browsers code.
