How disable auto launch of FF for manual updates?
I've been away a couple of weeks for holidays and the very first i run is Sumo (http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?sumo). Among may apps ready to update was Firefox. As I had many windows and tabs open the last time I closed FF I am not willing take any chances running an (potentially very insecure) insecure version of any app just to let it auto update.
So I downloaded "Firefox Setup Stub 23.0.1.exe" from https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-stub&os=win&lang=en-US and then let it run. Now as I am working on other important things for the moment I don't wish any manually updated app - and least of all my web browsers - to auto launch!!
THUS: Where the *!¤##^ is Firefox's dialog option letting users choose NOT to start FF after "manually" updating ?!?! I mean you have had it before...

I do not see that such software is needed for Firefox. Firefox is quite capable of updating itself.
If you hibernate that will allow you to close the computer without Firefox restarting, would that help ?
It may also be a wise precaution to bookmark any open tabs before an upgrade. The bookmarks are a lot more robust than session store or History data.
If you really wish to temporarily prevent an update on restarting I think the advice in this old article still works, it did last time I tried it in Windows.

I would be very happy if future FF's could have an auto-launch option check box for these manual updates - maybe moderator John99 could propose this to the Moz team?

We do not discuss development issues and decisions here; we only try to help fellow users. Sometimes of course we need to explain changes that have occurred or will occur in order to provide help and put things into context.
In theory anyone may propose a change or enhancement to Firefox. In practice User Experience teams and development experts look at and decide on what improvements are to be prioritised and how they fit in with a long term view of Firefox.
It is probable that it has been decided that automated updates are the way forward, and that there should be one version of Firefox: the current, secure, supported, and updated one.
