Green download arrow missing
Since Firefox 23 I cannot see the flashing green download arrow! It was an awesome addition and now it's lost. How can I get it back? I can't even see now, that something was downloaded... Why on earth did they change this feature?
hello, please see Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars in order to put the button onto your toolbar and make sure that your other download-related addons aren't interfering with the built-in button...
You can try to click to "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window if you do not see the Download toolbar button.
You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file if this didn't work.
The arrow is there, it just doesn't show the usual animation associated with downloading.
Ok, download statusbar addon was the culprit, thanks. Now the green arrow animation works like a charm.
Did you try to click "Restore Default Set" in case you still have an old download toolbar button or if there is otherwise a problem with the button that you currently have?
I saw the green arrow when downloading yesterday but I do not see it today. I am using v23. The only difference between yesterday and today is I ran Malwarebytes and backed up my computer.
Can't figure out what is wrong and what to fix.
Hi CiaoBella1, you can use Firefox's Customize feature to see whether the download arrow is on a different toolbar than it was before, or to move it to a more convenient location, or to re-add it if it somehow ended up in the collection of unused buttons. Check out this article for more details on how to do that: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars. Can you get it back to how it was?
The arrow hasn't moved from its position since updating to v23, so I can't imagine that is in on a different toolbar or in a different location. The only difference is it no longer turns green while it is downloading.
I saw that article and did not see how it applied to my situation.
You can try click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup.
- Firefox menu button > Options > Toolbar Layout
- View > Toolbars > Customize
You can also check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.
Hi CiaoBella1, most readers misunderstood when you said you didn't see the arrow, thinking that the gray placeholder arrow was missing completely.
If you click it after a download, does it show the file you just downloaded or is that missing as well?
If you press Ctrl+j to open your downloads list, or use the link on the panel that opens below the gray arrow, which dialog opens:
- Library dialog (on the left side, it shows History, Downloads, Tags, All Bookmarks)
- Old Download Manager window
Yes, if I click on the arrow, I see the file that I just downloaded.
Ctrl + J shows the library dialogue on the left side, but if I click the arrow, I see the current (and one older download). It is not the old download manager.
Hi CiaoBella1, I noticed you have a couple download-related extensions. I wonder whether one of those was meant to replace the arrow and could possibly be affecting it "lighting up" when you get a download. I haven't tested them myself. You could try disabling them to see whether that makes a difference.
To do that manually:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
If a link appears above an extension to restart Firefox, you can do that as the last step.
To test with all extensions disabled, you can try Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)
Any improvement in the behavior of the arrow?
Can you tell which add-ons are download-related? That had never occurred to me because I haven't added anything recently and seriously, the green arrow lit up on Saturday.
It's easy for me to disable one at a time. but I will have to try it later.
others have reported that "Download Statusbar" might interfere
I was just going by the ones with "download" in their names. I haven't tried them myself.
I have no idea what that means, but thank you.
Based on checking my add-ons, all I could figure is that all of my add--ons were downloaded, but none of them pertain to the act of downloading. They are primarily anti-tracking programs. At any rate, I lost (hid) my toolbar and then played around until I got it back. I just downloaded a document and the green arrow came back.
Can't explain what happened unless it was taking a nap.
Thank you for your help today.
ever since the Firefox 25 update my Downloads indicator on the toolbar has turned into a blank 4 inch wide button that takes half the width of the entire toolbar - according to what I have found from searching apparently this latest update breaks most themes?
when I customize the toolbar I can remove or replace it and restore the default set, all of which changes nothing.
Hi robyrob, do you mean Firefox 26? You can check your current version using:
Help > About Firefox
If you were using an add-on to create a download progress bar, please check for updates because Firefox 26 changes the way add-ons get information about pending and past downloads.
You can check for extension updates using the add-ons page:
You may have an unwanted extension that is injecting inappropriate ads into sites. Try this:
Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then look for a small button with a "gear" on it and run "Check for Updates".
If there's no update, you could disable the add-on on that tab, or you could remove the problem control from the toolbar using the Customize feature. (More on that: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)
If that doesn't work, please start a new question and include your OS, add-on, and setting information. You can start a new question at the following link. Scroll down past the suggestions to continue with the form (I think it has 3 different screens). https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems
JScher, a catch up.
What it is, is, from externally, I can open the download, go to file location, and delete. It then grays out. In other words, when I click on the arrow, that is external.
If I open downloads (see all) from the drop-down window, that is internal. When I open the file location, delete it, and come back to the download LIST, it is still not grayed out.
It took me several months to discover that. Thank you.
