Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.

In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:

Other, more technical information about these issues can be found under these Links:

Please tell us if this helped!

Can you spell out the error message in more detail?

Hi debmarielee1, although some computers may not be able to handle some games, there are a few things you can try.

This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with Flash. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8 -- not necessary for XP)

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Hi debmarielee1, there was a long thread earlier this year with numerous suggested fixes. One was to disable the Silverlight plugin. Although I can't think of a good reason that Flash and Silverlight should conflict, I think it's worth a try. You can do that here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category

Long thread: Warning: Unresponsive Plugin; Shockwave flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding.

This started for me about 3 days ago. Today I can't open any link without getting the box after a long pause. A specific fix is required, not a gun in the mouth reset or disable. Those are mindless suggestions. There is a specific problem, what is the specific solution?

Hi DonGateley, is the problem that any page which uses Flash hangs Firefox until eventually you get a nonresponsive script error? See whether your experience has the same solution (workaround, actually) as mine: Flash hangs Firefox (eventually get script continue/stop dialog).

If that doesn't match your symptoms, what is the "the box" you're getting? Did you try the other suggestions in this thread?

Thanks for the response.

Every page whether or not it used Flash, it seemed, was hanging for a bit and then putting up the "Flash Busy' box offering me the option to continue or stop the plugin. Stopping it was ok until the next link I opened. Any Flash video crashed. What fixed it was an uninstall of Flash followed by a reinstall followed by three system reboots (I'm stubborn.) Go figure.

This crap hung me up for two days. I so wish Chrome had a session manager as good as Session Manager. It is the _only_ thing anchoring me to Firefox at this point and I've been a user of the browser line since before it became Netscape. I think it is now beyond its maintainable lifetime.

What drives me batshit is that with all the outstanding bugs and problems Firefox has they devote huge resources to "improving" it which should be allocated instead to incorporating some forensic capabilities and fixing it. Forensic capabilities don't shine, flash and blink though. It takes brass balls in that situation to devote resources to develop and tout a brand new operating system. What do you suppose the chances are that I'll give that a spin given Mozilla's track record with Firefox reliability.

But thanks again, J., for the concern and the suggestions.

I have firefox and the latest flashplayer it only happens when playing zinga games chef vile.It only happens when visiting friends to get ingrediants . a box appears with it saying youre flashplayer is either to busy or may have stoppedworking altogether. There are two small boxes one which lets you continue the other to stop it . i press the box to continue to wait to see if it responds it does recover but makes the game impossible to play as it happens most of the time i visit friends it takes about two hours to visit two or three friends. it would be just nice to know wot is actually causing the flashplayer to stop . I have tried everything that has been suggested and it is just plain and simple i will have to get a better laptop. and hope the problem is that i have an old laptopand the fashplayer crashes cos the processor is either to slow or is working to fast for the flashplayer to work

Hi DonGateley, a lot of work is done on performance and stability in each release. Forensics is a challenge, but you might take a look at the plans for the Health Report feature (e.g., Firefox, Heal Thyself), as well as many of the pages available if you open about:about from the address bar, you can see that these issues are not being ignored.

The next challenge will be getting Mozilla to use such tools with the customers who are reporting problems.
